Vladislav Horay, an internationally renowned Ukrainian opera tenor, has been confirmed dead while on a voluntary humanitarian mission in the war-torn Sumy region of northeastern Ukraine.
Horay, a celebrated soloist of the Odesa National Opera, was hailed as a “world-class tenor” and an “Honoured Artist of Ukraine.” The Odesa theatre paid tribute to his legacy in a heartfelt post on Sunday, expressing the grief felt throughout the country’s cultural sphere.
“Tragic news has shaken the entire artistic community of Ukraine,” the opera house posted on Facebook. “(Horay) was not only a talented performer — he was an example of strength, dignity, and kindness in life.”
The specific circumstances surrounding his death have not been disclosed. However, it was confirmed he had been actively involved in a fundraising initiative for a Ukrainian naval unit, according to a post he made on Facebook on 5 June.
Horay joined the Odesa National Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet in 1993 and went on to build an illustrious international career. He performed in the USA, Canada, and the UK, including a notable appearance at London’s Royal Albert Hall. His commanding tenor was admired around the world.
His final performance was just a day before his death. The Odesa opera house shared a poignant video of Horay singing the Neapolitan classic “O Sole Mio.”
“Today, we share this video with you. It is not just a performance. It is farewell. It is the last concert. It is the last gift from a singer who lived for the stage and left a piece of his soul there.”
Horay had reportedly travelled to Sumy, a frontline region that has seen escalating battles as Russian forces attempt to advance towards the regional capital. The opera house confirmed he was there on a volunteer mission, though further details remain undisclosed.
The Sumy region, located near Ukraine’s northern border, has endured relentless shelling and skirmishes. While Russia’s forces are unlikely to take full control of the city of Sumy, their advance highlights the mounting military pressure facing Ukraine.
The death of Vladislav Horay is another stark reminder of the war’s human toll, reaching far beyond the battlefield. He is mourned not only as a brilliant artist but also as a brave citizen who gave his life for his country.
