Volodymyr Zelensky to Meet Trump on August 18, Reaffirms Commitment to Peace
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has confirmed he will meet US President Donald Trump in Washington, DC, on Monday, August 18, to discuss ways to end the ongoing war and violence in Ukraine.
Zelensky emphasised that Ukraine remains dedicated to pursuing peace with full commitment.
The announcement follows a high-profile summit between President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Anchorage, Alaska, which left Zelensky closely monitoring the outcomes of the Alaska talks between Trump and Putin.
While officials described the discussions as “making progress,” no concrete agreement was reached.
This marked Putin’s first visit to the United States in nearly ten years and the first face-to-face talks between the American and Russian leaders since 2021.
Speaking on social media platform X, Zelensky detailed his recent conversation with President Trump.
“We had a long and substantive conversation with POTUS. We started with one-on-one talks before inviting European leaders to join us.
This call lasted for more than an hour and a half, including about an hour of our bilateral conversation with President Trump.
Ukraine reaffirms its readiness to work with maximum effort to achieve peace. President Trump informed me about his meeting with the Russian leader and the main points of their discussion.
It is important that America’s strength has an impact on the development of the situation,” Zelensky wrote.
He added support for Trump’s idea of holding trilateral talks.
“We support President Trump’s proposal for a trilateral meeting between Ukraine, the USA, and Russia. Ukraine emphasises that key issues can be discussed at the level of leaders, and a trilateral format is suitable for this,” he said.
Zelensky confirmed the upcoming Washington meeting.

“On Monday, I will meet with President Trump in Washington, DC, to discuss all of the details regarding ending the killing and the war. I am grateful for the invitation.
It is important that Europeans are involved at every stage to ensure reliable security guarantees together with America. We also discussed positive signals from the American side regarding participation in guaranteeing Ukraine’s security.
We continue to coordinate our positions with all partners. I thank everyone who is helping,” he added.
The White House has confirmed that Trump spoke with Zelensky following his Alaska summit with Putin and also engaged with NATO leaders on Saturday. Despite the high-profile meetings, Trump secured no immediate breakthrough to halt Russia’s war in Ukraine.
Trump told reporters, “there’s no deal until there’s a deal,” after Putin claimed an “understanding” had been reached on Ukraine. The Russian president cautioned European nations against undermining the progress.
Putin reiterated Moscow’s long-standing stance, claiming Russia is “sincerely interested in putting an end” to the conflict.
He said a resolution would require addressing “all the root causes of the crisis” and acknowledged agreement with Trump on the importance of Ukraine’s security, without providing specifics.
On August 15, Zelensky had already expressed hope that the Alaska talks could pave the way for three-way discussions.
“The key thing is that this meeting should open up a real path towards a just peace and a substantive discussion between leaders in a trilateral format, Ukraine, the United States, and the Russian side,” he said on X.
