Joey Essex ‘Confident and Excited’ as He Prepares for Boxing Debut
Reality TV favourite Joey Essex is set to swap the nightclub for the ring, revealing he is “confident and excited” about his upcoming boxing debut.
The 35-year-old, who rose to fame on The Only Way Is Essex, is joining the growing trend of celebrity crossover boxing, popularised by YouTubers and novice fighters such as KSI and Logan Paul.
Essex has been training intensively with his uncle and professional coach Tony Sims ahead of his first match against Portuguese influencer Numeiro, scheduled for 30 August.
“I’ve got to prove myself, I’ve got to show I’m serious”

“You’re going to see me get in the ring with someone up for a fight, and so am I – I’m ready to show the world what I’m about,” he stated.
Born and raised in Chigwell, Essex admitted boxing had always been part of his life. His father, a former boxer, and his uncle inspired his interest.
“It was only a matter of time before I stepped into the ring,” he added. “With my TV work, there’s never been a gap where it’s fitted, but I feel ready and confident.”
Following his Towie days, Essex became a regular on the reality TV scene, taking on physically demanding shows like Splash! (diving), The Jump (winter sports), which he won, and Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins (military-style challenges). He also explored more serious topics, reflecting on his grief in a BBC Three documentary after his mother’s suicide.
“With all these shows, I always put 100% in – I put myself through pain and discipline,” Essex said. “This [boxing] is just another level of grit and discipline. A lot of people know me as being silly and joking around, [but in the gym] I like to keep it serious.”
Training under Sims’ watchful eye meant no special treatment. Essex was expected to perform just like any other boxer in the gym. Sims, who has nearly 30 years of experience and has trained world title holders like Anthony Joshua and Ricky Burns, praised his nephew’s work ethic.
“He will be more than capable of going four rounds,” Sims confirmed, looking ahead to the Manchester fight.
“I’m really enjoying it. You get to a point where you look forward to sparring, to getting punched in the face,” Essex admitted. “The closer we get to the fight, the more confident and excited I am getting. I believe in myself as a person. I feel I should have been an athlete, and this is my time.”
With his debut approaching, Essex is determined to reveal a tougher, more disciplined side to the public. Fans can expect a mix of grit, determination, and the occasional Essex charm when he steps into the ring.
