In a move that has sent shockwaves through both Republican circles and the wider political world, Marjorie Taylor Greene, once one of Donald Trump’s most loyal allies, has announced she will step down from the U.S. Congress.
Her resignation follows a bitter and very public falling-out with the former president over the handling of the Epstein documents and wider disagreements inside the MAGA movement.
Greene made the announcement on the 21st in a video shared on X, declaring, “Loyalty is a two-way street.” She confirmed that she will officially resign from her congressional post on 5 January next year.

Her communication was a blend of frustration and abdication, as she indicted Trump’s inner circle and fellow Republicans of pushing her away despite her times of unwavering support.
She claimed that the fidelity she had shown wasn’t returned, intimating that she felt politically abandoned by the veritable movement she helped promote.
A Key MAGA Figure Who Became a Symbol of Trumpism
Whether people respected her or criticised her, Marjorie Taylor Greene has incontrovertibly been a central figure in U.S. right- sect politics.
First tagged in 2020, she quickly became a caption-dominating personality known for backing conspiracy theories, challenging public health measures, and taking hard-line views on everything from immigration to government spending.
She erected her brand by tapping into the energy of the MAGA base, frequently echoing Trump’s tone and style.
Her provocative remarks, including her infamous claim that “If I had led the January 6th Capitol riot, I would have been armed and succeeded”, only further cemented her image as a fearless, if controversial, conservative firebrand.
Greene’s unwavering defence of Trump over the years earned her his full support. At one point, she was indeed floated as an implicit vice-presidential pick for his 2024 crusade, showing just how influential she had become within the Republican Party.
Calls to Release the Epstein Documents
Their relationship began to fracture when new allegations surfaced linking Trump to the crimes of Jeffrey Epstein, the billionaire who failed in guardianship while awaiting trial over charges involving the exploitation of minors.

Greene publicly demanded full transparency, insisting that “All documents must be disclosed to clear the suspicions.” Her stance directly contradicted the approach reportedly preferred by Trump’s camp, who wanted the controversy to quietly fade.
Not only did she push for the release of the Epstein documents, but she also criticised Trump more astronomically, accusing him of prioritising foreign policy while ignoring domestic issues like education, healthcare, and the rising cost of living.
This was the moment the formerly tight cooperation began to unravel.
Trump’s Counterattack and the Final Fallout
Trump did not hold back. Using social media as his battleground, he branded Greene a “disgrace to the Republican Party” and a “traitor,” abruptly severing their political alliance.
In a pointed jab at her surname, he mocked, “Green turns brown when it rots.” He also threatened to support her political rivals in the next midterm elections.
Greene responded by expressing fear over the scale of retaliation she expected, saying, “Trump will pour tens of billions of Korean won into destroying me,” and claiming she believed he could put her in real danger.
Her abdication, while dramatic, reflects the increasingly unpredictable nature of Republican Party politics and the shifting power dynamics around Trump himself. It also highlights how snappily fidelity can be awarded, or penalised, in a moment’s deeply polarised climate.
What Her Departure Means for the GOP?
Greene’s exit leaves a notable gap within the MAGA sect of the Republican Party. She wasn’t just another conservative legislator; she was a symbol of the movement’s energy, defiance, and frequently divisive style.
Her fall from grace also raises questions about how Trump’s inner circle handles dissent and whether other high-profile Republicans may face analogous treatment if they break from the sanctioned line.
For now, Greene’s abdication marks the end of a short yet dramatic congressional chapter, one defined by fierce fidelity, explosive rhetoric, and eventually a political feud that indeed she couldn’t survive.
