London’s iconic Santander Cycles are set for a major upgrade, as Transport for London (TfL) extends its partnership with Serco Group until 2031. The goal is to make the bike hire network faster, easier, and more reliable for everyone using it across the capital.
Why the New Serco Contract Matters?
TfL’s new long-term deal with Serco ensures that the Santander Cycles scheme will continue to grow and innovate. Riders can expect smoother experiences, better technology, and more sustainable transport options.
Will Norman, London’s walking and cycling commissioner, said: “London’s boom in cycling shows no sign of slowing down, so it’s great to see further investment in improvements to the Santander Cycles scheme, including the UK’s first in-dock charging for e-bikes and a new, easier-to-use app.”
What Major Upgrades Are Planned for Santander Cycles?
UK’s First In‑Dock E‑Bike Charging
One of the headline features set to be introduced in summer 2026 is in‑dock charging for e‑bikes. This means electric bikes will be charged right at the docking stations, so you won’t turn up to find a low battery, a big step forward in reliability for users.
A Redesigned TfL App and QR Code Unlocking
TfL is also working on a fresh mobile app and an easier way to release bikes using QR codes straight from your smartphone, much like other bike‑share systems already active in London.
Current app users on Reddit have also shared frustrations with logging in and bike availability, highlighting why an improved app could make a real difference:
One of the standout changes is the introduction of the UK’s first in-dock e-bike charging system, set to launch in summer 2026. This means electric bikes will always be charged and ready to ride.
David Eddington, TfL’s head of cycle hire, added: “Our cycle hire scheme has gone from strength to strength thanks to our successful operating partnership with Serco.
We look forward to continuing to work with Serco to see even more innovative technologies introduced, ensuring that Santander Cycles can continue to be the best choice for Londoners.”
With Tube delays and busy travel periods still affecting daily journeys, many Londoners are now mixing cycling with public transport to get around more easily.
Tools like the Live London Underground Map for real-time Tube and train tracking help riders decide when it makes sense to cycle and when to switch back to the network, making journeys across the capital smoother and more flexible.
How Popular Are Santander Cycles?
The scheme is already a huge success, with thousands of Londoners using it daily for commuting, leisure, and sightseeing. In October 2025 alone, members hired bikes over 728,000 times, showing how vital the service has become.
Since 2015, more than 109 million hires have been recorded, including over 3 million e-bike rentals.
Anthony Kirby, Serco’s group chief executive, said: “We are delighted to have been awarded this new contract that will see significant service improvements for TfL and the thousands of Londoners and visitors who use the bikes every day.”
What does this mean for Riders?
These upgrades will make using Santander Cycles easier and more enjoyable:
- Faster bike hire with QR code release
- A more intuitive mobile app
- Dependably charged e-bikes are ready at every docking station
With these improvements, Santander Cycles will remain a key part of London’s sustainable transport network, helping the city move towards greener, cleaner, and more accessible travel options.
