Marc Guiu: Chelsea Prodigy Nears Sunderland Loan Move in Premier League Shake-Up
Chelsea’s teenage forward Marc Guiu is on the verge of securing a season-long loan move to Premier League newcomers Sunderland, in what promises to be a key step in his development and a boost to the Black Cats’ attacking options.
The deal, confirmed by club insiders, is a straight loan with no purchase clause attached. Sunderland will not hold an option to make the move permanent. Chelsea remain firm on their long-term vision for the 19-year-old Spaniard.
Guiu, who only arrived at Stamford Bridge last summer from Barcelona in a £5 million switch, is regarded as a future first-team regular. But with fierce competition for places at Chelsea, a temporary spell away was deemed necessary.
He’s set to undergo a medical on Wearside in the coming days. Once signed off, Guiu will become Sunderland’s ninth summer signing as they gear up for their return to the top flight following a triumphant play-off final win over Sheffield United at Wembley.
A source close to the club said, “Marc is part of the project. This loan is just about development, not departure.”
Guiu made a solid impression in his debut season with the Blues, notching six goals in 16 games, all of them during Chelsea’s successful Conference League campaign. Despite limited domestic appearances, his European contributions didn’t go unnoticed.
He joined on a five-year deal, signalling Chelsea’s belief in his long-term potential. The Spain youth international had previously been on the radar of relegated Ipswich Town. But their interest cooled once Chelsea swooped for Liam Delap, Ipswich’s top scorer, by activating his £30 million release clause.
With Chelsea still trimming a bloated squad, Guiu’s move is one of several expected to be finalised before the end of the window.
Sunderland, meanwhile, appear intent on making a serious statement in their Premier League return. And if Guiu finds his rhythm, this move could prove crucial for both player and club.
