Ashvir Singh Johal Makes History as Morecambe’s First Sikh Manager
Morecambe Football Club has made history with the appointment of Ashvir Singh Johal as their new manager.
At just 30 years old, Johal is not only the youngest manager across the top five tiers of English football but also the first Sikh to take charge of a professional British club.
He steps into the role following the departure of Derek Adams, who was dismissed on Monday by the club’s new owners, the Panjab Warriors, shortly after their takeover.
The consortium’s arrival has been a lifeline for the Shrimps. The takeover prevented the club from being expelled from the National League and averted a looming crisis that could have led to its extinction.
Johal brings a wealth of experience despite his age. He has worked under Kolo Toure at Wigan and assisted Cesc Fabregas with the youth team at Italian side Como.
He also recently became one of the youngest coaches in English football history to earn a UEFA Pro Licence.
His journey began in Leicester City’s academy, where he spent a decade developing young talent before moving into senior football with Wigan in 2022.
In a Twitter post accompanying his appointment, Johal expressed his pride and anticipation for the role: “I’m extremely proud to be the manager of Morecambe Football Club.”

Speaking to the BBC earlier this year, Johal said: “I have been fortunate to work with and learn from some incredible people, and I’m especially grateful to Kolo and Cesc.
I know what world-class standards look like, how to lead with clarity, and how to develop a team with a real identity.
We will create an environment that brings the best out of people, that people want to be part of, and that drives people to improve every day.”
The challenge ahead is immediate. Morecambe’s squad currently consists of just five first-team players. Johal will begin his managerial reign facing Altrincham at 12.30pm on Saturday.
The spotlight is now on Johal as he embarks on a historic journey, bringing fresh energy, vision, and ambition to a club fighting for its future.
As Johal prepares to lead the Shrimps into this new chapter, the club Morecambe FC continues to provide updates and insights into the team’s progress.
