Whitby Abbey: Tragedy Unfolds as Bodies Recovered from Cliff Base in North Yorkshire
A tragic discovery was made near one of North Yorkshire’s most iconic landmarks last night, as the bodies of a man and woman were found beneath the cliffs close to Whitby Abbey.
Emergency services were called into action just after 7pm on Wednesday evening, following a report from a passer-by who spotted two people lying motionless on the rocks below the historic abbey. With the sea tide surging in rapidly and conditions growing increasingly hazardous, the coastguard quickly stepped in.
A North Yorkshire Police spokesperson confirmed: “Emergency service teams have been involved in the recovery of two bodies from beneath the cliff at Whitby Abbey on Wednesday evening.
A member of the public called the police at 7.16pm after spotting a man and woman on the rocks below.
With the tide coming in fast, the Coastguard coordinated a helicopter recovery to ambulance crews near Whitby Abbey. This was completed at 8.24pm.
Paramedics confirmed the deaths, and the bodies have been taken to hospital by ambulance. Police are on with tracing the next of kin of the man and woman while the investigation continues into the circumstances of the sudden deaths for a coroner’s report.”
Despite the swift response, the recovery operation took over an hour due to the treacherous coastal weather. Paramedics confirmed both individuals were dead at the scene.
Forensic teams and investigators have launched an inquiry into the cause of the deaths. At this stage, authorities are treating the incident as unexplained. There is no word yet on the identities of the deceased.
Efforts to trace next of kin are ongoing. Police are urging anyone who might have seen the couple in the area or has information that could assist with the investigation to come forward immediately.
