The Tony Gonzales election results have thrown the Texas Republican into political uncertainty after he failed to secure enough votes to avoid a runoff.
Tony Gonzales won 42% of the vote in the Republican primary for Texas’s 23rd Congressional District this week, falling short of the 50% threshold required to clinch the nomination outright.
The vote took place on Tuesday in Texas, with the result confirming that Gonzales will now face challenger Brandon Herrera in a May runoff.
The race has drawn national attention following allegations of misconduct involving a former staff member. With just under 200 votes separating the two candidates, the contest remains finely balanced.
Why did Tony Gonzales fail to secure 50% of the vote?
Gonzales secured 42% of ballots cast in the Republican primary. Herrera received 20,276 votes, narrowly ahead of Gonzales’ 20,080 in the head-to-head count, although neither candidate crossed the 50% mark required under Texas election rules.
Under state law, if no candidate wins a majority, the top two advance to a runoff election. That vote is scheduled for May.

The district in question, Texas’s 23rd Congressional District, stretches from San Antonio to El Paso and covers a vast border region. It has long been considered politically competitive and strategically important for Republicans.
Herrera, who has built a large online following as a gun rights advocate, previously came within fewer than 400 votes of unseating Gonzales two years ago. This latest result signals continued unrest within the local Republican base.
How has the alleged scandal affected Tony Gonzales election results?
The primary campaign unfolded under the shadow of serious allegations involving Gonzales and a former staff member.
In September, the Congressman’s Uvalde regional director died after setting herself alight at her home. The tragedy occurred in Uvalde, a community still recovering from the 2022 school shooting.
In October, report allegations of an affair between Gonzales and the staffer. Gonzales initially did not publicly deny the claims but later stated in November that rumours of an affair were “not true”.

In recent weeks, the staffer’s husband released text messages he claimed showed inappropriate conduct. Gonzales has since described himself as the victim of blackmail and published a letter from the husband’s lawyer demanding financial compensation.
The matter remains under review by the Office of Congressional Conduct, which investigates potential breaches of House rules. Congressional rules prohibit members from engaging in relationships with staff they supervise.
More than a dozen voters interviewed locally said the allegations influenced their decision. One voter said he would have preferred a stronger public defence from Gonzales. Others dismissed the claims as politically motivated.
What role did Donald Trump’s backing play?
Despite internal party criticism, Gonzales received public support from Donald Trump.
Following the primary, Gonzales posted on social media: “Thank you, President Trump and all those #TX23 constituents that support our campaign. Onward to a victorious May.”
Trump’s endorsement remains influential in Republican primaries, particularly in conservative districts. However, the razor-thin margin suggests the backing was not enough to secure an outright win.
What happens next in the runoff election?
The May runoff will determine the Republican nominee for November’s general election.
Key facts:
- Gonzales: 42% of primary vote
- Herrera: 20,276 votes (narrow lead in raw count)
- Runoff date: May 2026
- District: Border region from San Antonio to El Paso
Herrera has signalled he will continue to focus on what he calls issues of accountability and leadership. Gonzales has refused calls from some Republicans to resign and confirmed he will remain in office until January, when the next congressional term begins.
