Daniil Medvedev Starts “New Project” with Smooth Win at Hangzhou Open
Daniil Medvedev kicked off a fresh chapter in his tennis career with a classy performance at the Lynk & Co Hangzhou Open on Saturday.
Making his first appearance since parting ways with long-time coach Gilles Cervara, Medvedev, the former world No. 1, secured a comfortable 6-2, 6-3 victory over rising qualifier Nishesh Basavareddy at the Chinese ATP 250 event.

“It was a great match for me. I’m happy with the way I played, with the way I served,” said Medvedev after the match. “I’m happy to win of course.
I have not been winning a lot of matches, so I’m happy to win. I really like the city, I’ve enjoyed it here, so I’m happy to stay for a couple more days.”
The 29-year-old showed early dominance, winning nine consecutive games from 2-2 in the first set to take control of his first meeting against Basavareddy.
Despite being broken once while serving at 5-1 in the second set, Medvedev converted four out of eight break points, according to Infosys ATP Stats, sealing the match in just 76 minutes.
Currently ranked world No. 18, Medvedev has faced a challenging 2025 season. The Russian star claimed just a single victory across the four Grand Slam events this year.
His first-round exit at the US Open to Benjamin Bonzi was a key moment that led to his coaching change.
Now working with Thomas Johansson and Rohan Goetzke, Medvedev described this new partnership earlier in the week as “an interesting new project.”
With his opening palm in Hangzhou under his belt, he’s now targeting a semi-final clash against either birthplace favourite Wu Yibing or Sebastian Korda.
Meanwhile, American#NextGenATP star Learner Tien also advanced to the quarter-finals with a 6- 4, 6- 3 palm over Giulio Zeppieri.
Tien, currently third in the PIF ATP Live Race To Jeddah, will next face top seed Andrey Rublev or qualifier Valentin Royer.
