A teenage boy in West Belfast was left shaken after being threatened by a gang armed with a knife, who bizarrely stole his pet tortoise during the confrontation.
The unsettling incident unfolded on Tuesday evening in the Colinmill area, sending shockwaves through the local community.
The attack took place shortly after 7.30pm, according to police. The teenager was approached by three young males who demanded money. When he refused, one of them pulled a knife.
“At around 7.30pm, it was reported that a young male in his teens was approached by three males in the area. It was reported that the males demanded money from the young male, and when he refused, one of the males threatened him with a knife,” said Detective Sergeant Kitchen of the PSNI.
In a bizarre twist, the gang didn’t just leave empty-handed. They fled the scene not only towards Old Colin Road, but with the boy’s pet tortoise in tow.
“The males then made off towards the Old Colin Road area, as well as taking the young male’s pet tortoise following the incident,” DS Kitchen added.
Police have issued a description of the suspects. All three are believed to be between 14 and 16 years of age. They were dressed in black clothing with their faces obscured by hoods and scarves.
The one wielding the knife was said to be wearing a black North Face jacket and dark clothing.
Enquiries are ongoing, and officers are urging anyone with information to step forward.
“Enquiries are continuing and anyone with any information is asked to contact police on 101, quoting reference number 1564 of May 20,” said DS Kitchen.
The theft of a beloved family pet has caused anger and concern locally, with residents stunned at the callous nature of the incident. The PSNI has reassured the public that they are treating the matter seriously and pursuing all leads.
Anyone with CCTV, dash cam footage, or who may have seen suspicious behaviour in the area at the time is encouraged to get in touch.
