Bas Rutten Discusses ‘The Smashing Machine’ and Dwayne Johnson’s Transformative Role
In a candid chat, MMA pioneer Bas Rutten opened up about The Smashing Machine and its role in showcasing the sport’s roots.
The upcoming film stars Dwayne Johnson as UFC legend Mark Kerr, exploring his rise, struggles, and addiction from the late 1990s.
Emily Blunt plays Kerr’s ex-wife, Dawn Staples, while Ryan Bader steps into the role of fellow fighter Mark Coleman. Rutten himself also appears in the film.
Rutten believes the film shines a long-overdue light on the sport’s early pioneers. “One hundred percent [my era will be appreciated more], I think now it shines a light on whatever you see on TV and on the big screen, or whatever it is, it doesn’t mean your life is in perfect order.”
He added that fighters often face immense personal challenges: “A lot of these guys, there’s more fighters that go through the same struggles, crazy struggles, and craziness at home.”
The film is a pictorial memorial that, behind the spectacle, fighters are mortal, facing particular battles down from the pen.
Rutten carved his path in the 1990s, starting in Japan’s Pancrase organisation, where he became openweight champion.
In 1999, he joined the UFC, defeating Tsuyoshi Kohsaka via TKO and later winning the heavyweight title after a split decision against Kevin Randleman.
The Smashing Machine is getting closer to release and Dwayne Johnson’s acting career aims to take on a new life.

Although injuries forced his original withdrawal in 1999, Rutten returned compactly in 2006, ending his career with a 28-4-1 record.
Reflecting on his place in MMA history, he said, “How cool is that we are the pioneers? There’s only a certain number of pioneers, like 150-200 guys.
That will always stay the same. The champions keep on coming and going, but the guys that started it and were a part of that, I’m very proud of that.”
Johnson’s portrayal of Kerr has already attracted praise. The actor underwent a physical transformation to authentically represent Kerr’s physique and immersed himself in the emotional aspects of the fighter’s journey.
Rutten, appearing alongside him, commended Johnson’s attention to detail and authenticity.
“My wife said, ‘Oh my God, it’s him. He’s really good.’”
As mixed martial arts continues to capture mainstream interest, Rutten believes films like The Smashing Machine educate the public about the sport’s origins and the sacrifices of its pioneers.
He hopes audiences will gain a deeper appreciation for those who helped shape MMA into the global phenomenon it is today.
The Smashing Machine is set to premiere in UK cinemas on 3 October 2025.
