Motorists across Tyne and Wear are waking up to major trip disruption this morning after a serious A19 crash forced authorities to shut the road in both directions overnight.
The incident, described as a “serious collision”, took place just after 11 pm on Friday between the A1058 Silverlink Roundabout and the A1056 Killingworth Way.

In a statement, National Highways said: “The A19 in Tyne and Wear is closed in both directions between the A1058 Silverlink Roundabout near Tynemouth and the A191 at Holystone due to a serious collision which occurred just after 11pm last night (05.12.25).
Emergency services, including Northumbria Police, are in attendance. National Highways Traffic Officers and contractors have been providing assistance with traffic management.
Due to the nature of the incident, the road will be closed into the morning to allow for collision investigation works to take place.”

- Continue along Norham Road, also at the A191 cloverleaf, take the alternate exit to stay on the A191.
- At the coming two roundabouts, again take the alternate exit to remain on the A191 until Holystone Roundabout.
- From Holystone, turn right and re-join the A19 northbound.
This route is anticipated to remain in place until police have completed on-scene examinations.
