Volodymyr Zelensky Appoints Svyrydenko as Prime Minister in Major Cabinet Shake-Up
In a bold political move aimed at breathing new life into Ukraine’s wartime leadership, President Volodymyr Zelensky has named Yulia Svyrydenko as the new prime minister.
The announcement, made on Thursday, marks a significant shift at the top of Ukraine’s government for the first time since Russia’s full-scale invasion began over two years ago.
Ms Svyrydenko’s elevation to prime minister signals a focused effort by Zelensky to energise his administration and tackle wartime challenges head-on — particularly the urgent need to ramp up domestic weapons production.
A trusted figure within Zelensky’s inner circle, Svyrydenko has made her mark through diplomatic work, especially in economic and defence spheres.
“She played a key role in negotiating a US–Ukraine mineral agreement, ensuring the terms were acceptable to Kyiv.”
Her resume speaks volumes. As the economy minister, she was instrumental in shaping Kyiv’s post-war recovery strategy. She has been a regular presence in negotiations with Western partners, pushing forward defence co-operation deals and reconstruction plans.
“She has frequently represented Ukraine in high-level talks with western partners, focusing on defence co-operation, economic recovery and reconstruction.”
This reshuffle also sees Denys Shmyhal, Ukraine’s longest-serving head of government, stepping into a new role.
“Mr Shmyhal now moves to become defence minister,” according to the country’s official parliamentary website.
While the changes may appear sweeping from abroad, reactions inside Ukraine have been more measured. Many view the reshuffle not as a pivot, but as a realignment, bringing loyal and proven hands into key positions without upending the entire system.
“She is described as a diligent executive with a reputation for loyalty to the presidential office.”
Other cabinet adjustments are expected in the coming days, but Svyrydenko’s appointment clearly leads the headlines. It sends a strong message — Ukraine is not slowing down. With the war grinding on and international focus shifting, Zelensky is reinforcing his team with leaders who know how to act under pressure.
More than symbolism, this move reflects a strategy. A commitment to push forward. To adapt. And to hold the line.
