Lexington Community Shaken by Church Shooting: Leaders Urge Preparedness and Support
The Lexington Community is reeling after a deadly shooting unfolded at a local church, leaving officials and residents in shock and grief.
The tragic incident, which unfolded on Sunday at Richmond Road Baptist Church, prompted a swift and coordinated response from local law enforcement. Former Lexington Police Chief Anthany Beatty commended the agencies involved, noting the efficiency of their actions.
“As the leader of an agency in terms of law enforcement, if you’re doing your job and you’re doing it the right way the that ought to– even though it’s a tragic crisis-filled dynamic situation, it ought to still happen pretty fluidly,” Beatty said.
Beatty reflected on the tension of situations where suspects remain at large, explaining the dangers posed not just to the public but to responding officers as well.
“So in a law enforcement sense, in my mentality, I’m thinking okay this person is at the limit now because they wouldn’t mind posing a threat to the law enforcement agency,” he added.
In the wake of the violence, church leaders nearby are reassessing their own protocols. Just a few miles from the scene, Pastor Tim Wade of Boone’s Creek Baptist Church spoke about how seriously his congregation takes safety.
“It’s incomprehensible for us to understand how something like that would take place at a place that’s supposed to be safe and sacred,” Wade said.
Despite the tragedy, his church held their regular evening service. It became a moment of prayer, reflection, and reassurance.
“Unfortunately, this has to be part of the conversation, but we do take that very seriously,” Wade added.
Lexington Mayor Linda Gorton and Police Chief Lawrence Weathers released a statement praising the brave actions of law enforcement and affirming their commitment to supporting those impacted.
