Louis Tomlinson: Liam Payne’s Death ‘Completely Put a Pin’ in One Direction Reunion
The possibility of a One Direction reunion has been cast into serious mistrust following the woeful death of Liam Payne, according to bandmate Louis Tomlinson.
Payne, 31, tragically failed last October after falling from a hostel deck in Argentina. His end has left a lasting void among his former bandmates.
Speaking candidly on The Diary Of A CEO podcast with Steven Bartlett, Louis said the news of Liam’s death has “completely put a pin in” any potential plans for the iconic boy band’s return.
“Never say never, right, but I’m just not sure it would be right to him [Liam],” Louis explained.
He went on to reflect on a hypothetical future reunion: “Say for the sake of argument, 25 years, it’s like a f*****g Oasis thing, they offer us an arm and a leg, and they’re like, ‘Come back and do this many shows’, I don’t know. It’s just completely put a pin in all of that.
And the irony is, there was no one campaigning for One Direction to get back more than Liam. I would say I came in a close second.”
Louis, 33, revealed how much he and his former bandmates, Harry Styles, Niall Horan, and Zayn Malik admired Liam. “We all looked up to him massively,” he said.
He also highlighted the importance of remembering Liam correctly: “When I put up my post about him [Liam], I really wanted him to be remembered the way that he should be remembered.
I could just go on and talk all day about how amazing he was, but I think we all looked up to him.
I don’t think we would have been brave enough to say at that age when I was in the band, I think I would’ve had too much pride, but we all looked up to him massively.”
The anniversary of One Direction’s formation earlier this year, marking 15 years since the band first rose to fame, proved to be a difficult moment for Louis.
Speaking to Rolling Stone UK, he admitted the milestone felt “really uncomfortable” in light of Liam’s absence: “It was really uncomfortable, actually, the 15th anniversary, because the [collective] feeling to celebrate is as important, if not more important than ever, on behalf of Liam.
You know, there’s still a level in my head [where it feels] unjust and frustrating that he’s not with us anymore. So, it just brought up those feelings, although I’m still living with them anyway.”
Louis’s words accentuate the profound impact Liam had on his musketeers and bandmates, and the deep sense of loss felt by the One Direction family.
Any talk of a reunion now comes with the heavy weight of his absence, leaving suckers to wonder if the group will ever take the stage together again.
