Xiaomi 17 Pro Max Unveiled with 7,500mAh Battery: Bold Skip to 17 as Beijing Giant Takes Aim at Apple

Beijing’s tech powerhouse Xiaomi has made a daring move in the smartphone arena, sidestepping the number 16 entirely to launch its next flagship, the Xiaomi 17 series.

The line-up, revealed on Wednesday, introduces the Xiaomi 17, 17 Pro, and the headline-grabbing Xiaomi 17 Pro Max, a device squarely positioned as a fierce rival to Apple’s new iPhone 17.

Company chairman Lei Jun called the new range an “astonishing transformation,” setting the tone for what Xiaomi promises is a game-changing release.

Pre-orders are already live in China, with sales commencing on September 27. UK and European launch dates remain undisclosed, but industry watchers expect announcements in the coming weeks.

Why jump from 15 to 17? Xiaomi hasn’t spelled it out, but the move sparks intrigue. By leaping over 16, the brand signals a clean break from the past, pitching the new phones as a fresh chapter rather than a simple upgrade.

Despite premium specs, Xiaomi is keeping prices competitive. The base Xiaomi 17 starts at RMB 4,499 (around £495), the 17 Pro at RMB 4,999 (roughly £550), and the top-tier 17 Pro Max from RMB 5,999 (about £660).

Lei Jun stressed a philosophy of “more features without a price increase,” a direct swipe at Apple’s costly flagship range.

The Xiaomi 17 Pro Max is shaping up to be the star of the show. It packs a monumental 7,500mAh battery using Xiaomi’s new Jinshajiang stacked design.

The company claims it outlasts the iPhone 17, even when Apple’s device is paired with an external 5,000mAh MagSafe pack. All three models support 100W fast charging and play nicely with third-party PPS chargers.

Both the 17 Pro and Pro Max flaunt a striking extra: a small “Miracle View” screen tucked next to the rear cameras.

This mini display can show notifications, emails, or even double as a selfie viewfinder. Up front, Xiaomi has ditched curved edges for a crisp flat design, boasting ultra-narrow 1.18mm bezels.

The Pro Max goes a step further with a Super Pixel OLED panel built on Real RGB technology, promising richer colours and superior energy efficiency.

Under the hood, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 powers the series, with benchmark results claiming a single-core score of 3,826 and a multi-core leap to 12,300, figures Xiaomi calls the “world’s fastest mobile SoC.”

Photography lovers aren’t left out. The Leica-engineered camera array pairs a Light Hunter 950L sensor with a Samsung JN5 telephoto lens, ensuring sharp shots in any light.

While the initial launch is China-only, Xiaomi’s aggressive pricing and powerhouse features will grab UK attention once a release date lands.

The Xiaomi 17 Pro Max in particular looks set to shake the premium market, tempting users who crave Apple-level performance without the hefty Apple price tag.
