Red Arrows Take Flight as Eastbourne International Airshow Opens
The skies above Eastbourne are set to roar with excitement as the much-loved Eastbourne International Airshow kicks off today.
At 10:30 BST, the seafront will come alive, with the first aircraft expected to take to the air from 13:15. The iconic Red Arrows will lead the charge – and they’ll dazzle crowds every single day of the four-day spectacle.
Organisers from Eastbourne Borough Council describe it as the “biggest free seafront airshow in the UK”, a major summer highlight that injects millions into the local economy and draws hundreds of thousands of visitors.
There had been whispers of uncertainty earlier this year, with the council warning the future of the event could be under threat due to funding strains.
But the 31st edition has landed – and it’s one with special significance. This year’s show also commemorates the 80th anniversary of VJ Day, marking the end of World War Two in 1945.
Military aviation fans are in for a treat. Expect the thunder of the RAF Typhoon, the graceful presence of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, Lancaster, Spitfire, and Hurricane in unison, and the precision of the Royal Navy Black Cats helicopter display.
Adding to the spectacle is the largest aircraft ever to appear at Airbourne. With a staggering 42.4-metre wingspan – more than triple the length of a double-decker bus, it’s set to be an awe-inspiring sight.
Councillor Margaret Bannister summed up the mood: she was “delighted” that “some real crowd favourites” would be performing, adding the event was “great news for residents, visitors and local businesses.”
For four days, Eastbourne will be looking skywards. Engines will roar, the sea breeze will carry the scent of jet fuel, and the town will once again remind Britain why the Eastbourne Airshow is a jewel in the summer calendar.
