Britain is bracing for further dislocation as a burst of Siberian air drives fresh snow, ice, and indurating winds across the country.
The latest snowfall forecast from the Met Office includes new 18-hour yellow and amber warnings, with conditions anticipated to worsen overnight.
On Wednesday evening, travel chaos unfolded on the A171 Birk Brow Road between Guisborough and Whitby, where “hundreds” of vehicles were reportedly stranded.
Two lorries and two cars became stuck on the steep, snowy stretch, blocking much of the route and leaving other drivers unable to move.
North Yorkshire Police prompted people to avoid the area, saying “lots of vehicles” were getting trapped as conditions deteriorated.
The incident highlights how snappily this cold snap has taken hold, with wide downtime rainfall hazards anticipated to continue through Thursday.
Updated snow and ice warnings across England
The Met Office extended one of its existing warnings to cover much of northern and eastern Lincolnshire from 5pm today until 11am tomorrow.
The forecaster warned that “wintry showers bringing a risk of ice may lead to some disruption” overnight and during the Thursday morning commute.

This sits alongside a more severe amber snow warning affecting parts of Yorkshire and the North East, running throughout Thursday, 20 November.
Areas affected by the amber warning
The regions included in the amber alert are:
- East Riding of Yorkshire
- North Yorkshire
Parts of the North East are also covered, including:
- Redcar
- Cleveland
The Met Office said: “Frequent wintry showers will feed inland from the North Sea, giving significant snow accumulations over the North York Moors and parts of the Yorkshire Wolds.”
Up to 15 – 25 cm of snow could fall on hills above 100 metres by the end of Thursday. Strong, breezy winds may produce blizzard conditions, reducing visibility and making the trip dangerous. Many lightning strikes may also accompany the heaviest showers.
East of England: cold, breezy, and unsettled
The east of England will continue to feel the bite of downtime with a cold and breezy Thursday. Coastal snow showers are anticipated to drift further inland, bringing a heavier day. Temperatures will struggle to exceed 4°C.
Overnight, showers will be confined to the Norfolk bank, with a wide frost and icy patches forming as temperatures dip to -1°C. Winds are anticipated to ease gradually by morning.
North East England: freezing temperatures and wintry showers
The North East faces another indurating day as sleet and snow showers push inland. Day temperatures will sit around 3°C, before plunging to -4°C overnight. Frost and icy patches are likely, especially on undressed roads and pavements. Winds will ease later in the night.
Yorkshire and the Humber: snow risk increases inland
A cold and breezy Thursday is expected across Yorkshire and the Humber, with showers spreading inland and bringing a higher chance of sleet and snow.
The North York Moors and the Yorkshire Wolds are set to see the heaviest falls. Daytime highs are expected to reach 4°C, dropping to -5°C later in the night.
North West England: frosty start, sunny spells later
The North West will start frosty but largely dry, with the possibility of the odd shower over Cheshire. Winds will ease slightly, though remain brisk near beachfronts and hills. Overnight lows of -5 °C are anticipated.
Thursday should bring some welcome sunny spells, though temperatures will remain cold, rising to around 6 °C.
West Midlands: clear, cold, and bright
The West Midlands is set for a dry but frosty launch after clear skies allowed temperatures to fall to around -3 °C overnight. Thursday will stay bright with sun throughout the day, reaching 4 °C, before frost returns again on Thursday night.
East Midlands: breezy with scattered wintry showers
The East Midlands can anticipate sub-zero temperatures overnight, falling to around -2°C. Wintry showers will continue along the east seacoast into Thursday, with a chance of further snow and ice.
Showers are due to spread inland, making for a cloudier, colder day. Highs will reach around 5 °C.
