South London is set to sparkle once again. The much-loved Fireworks in the Park event in Wimbledon has officially been granted a permanent annual license, securing its place as one of the capital’s most anticipated autumn spectacles.
Thousands are expected to pour into Wimbledon Park this November for the dazzling South London fireworks display, following fresh assurances that the event will remain “safe, well-managed and community-focused.”
After times of temporary warrants, Wandsworth Council has now given Merton Council the go-ahead to host the festivity every time under a new demesne license.
The decision, made during a licensing hearing on 21 October, means organizers can avoid monthly operations and rather concentrate on keeping the event vibrant and secure.
The committee’s report praised the celebration as a “long-standing, well-attended community occasion that thousands enjoy each year.”
This year’s display will light up the skies on Saturday, 8 November, with future dates to be confirmed annually.
Still, it hasn’t been smooth sailing. The original licensing request drew concern from some nearby residents.
The operation included warrants to vend alcohol, play music, and host entertainment in the demesne from 11 am to 11 pm on any day of the week, a detail that sparked fears of inordinate dislocation.
Licensing officers later clarified that the move was simply to allow flexibility since the fireworks may fall on different weekdays each time.
The license remains restricted to one night annually, during October or November.
Daz Guerin, Merton’s head of cultural events, defended the long-standing tradition, stating: “This event has a long-standing place in the local community calendar, attracting residents of all ages and backgrounds from across the boroughs of Wandsworth and Merton to enjoy safe, well-managed and celebratory events.
Our intention in applying for this license is to ensure the event continues to be delivered responsibly and in full compliance with the licensing objectives.”
He added: “The Wimbledon fireworks have long been a valued community tradition bringing people together in a safe, managed environment.
By holding an event under a premises license, we can ensure that all aspects of the evening are professionally controlled, risk assessed, and accountable.”
In response to residents’ enterprises, the licensing commission tweaked the event timings, starting from 4.30 pm on weekdays and 11 am on weekends, allowing for better crowd and noise operation.
The final decision was described as one that “balanced the interests of the applicant, residents, and responsible authorities, aiming to support a safe and inclusive event while protecting the residential community from undue disruption.”
