Sophie Ellis-Bextor Hits Independent Record Shops Across the UK
Pop sensation Sophie Ellis-Bextor has been making waves on the UK independent music scene this week, visiting local record stores to champion small businesses and celebrate the ongoing vinyl revival.
The Murder on the Dancefloor singer made a special stop at Applestump Records in Nantwich, Cheshire, drawing a crowd of 150 enthusiastic fans to the shop’s new premises.
What began as a driveway record venture during lockdown has now transformed into a thriving independent store.
“It’s really important to come to these beautiful independent record shops like Applestump,” Ellis-Bextor said, highlighting the vital role such stores play in keeping music culture alive.
Before Cheshire, Ellis-Bextor toured independent stores in Southampton and Liverpool. Her visits weren’t just photo ops; she spent time meeting fans, chatting, and signing merchandise.
“We really bed in, meet and chat to everybody, and sign anything they brought along,” she added.
After autographing copies of her latest album, Perimenopop, Ellis-Bextor shared her love for vinyl and the joy of passing it down to the next generation.
“My 13-year-old and my 21-year-old collect a lot of albums on vinyl, so the baton is being passed,” she said.
Applestump Records co-owners Steve and Dani Cook said hosting Ellis-Bextor was a dream come true. “It’s been a journey,” laughed Mrs Cook. “It’s been great to have Sophie here.”
The couple emphasised how vital it is to bring major artists into independent outlets. “It’s great to get artists like Sophie into independent stores because that’s what keeps us going,” Mrs Cook said.
She described the day as a delight, noting the star’s generosity and friendliness toward fans.
Fans shared their excitement as well. Karen Bennett, who discovered the store through Ellis-Bextor’s visit, praised the singer.
“She gave everybody loads of time,” Mrs Cook said. “She’s been a dream.”
Bennett admitted, “I didn’t even know this place existed until today. We’ll come back to Nantwich to visit the store.”
Applestump Records has previously hosted notable acts like Pete Doherty and The Lottery Winners.
The new, larger premises allow for more ambitious events, including live performances. “I’m going to book as many people as I possibly can, now that we’ve got a stage to do live stuff as well,” Mrs Cook confirmed.
Ellis-Bextor’s tour is a reminder of the enduring appeal of vinyl, the importance of independent stores, and the excitement fans feel when music legends come to town.
