Russia Attacks Poland: Warsaw Scrambles Jets as Drones Breach Airspace

In an unknown escalation, Poland has interdicted and destroyed multiple drones that entered its airspace during Russia’s ongoing assault on Ukraine.

This marks the first time Warsaw has laboriously engaged in military defence linked to the conflict, sparking concerns across Europe and NATO allies.

Polish authorities verified that their air defence systems, alongside NATO forces, were stationed to neutralise drones that constantly violated Polish skies along the western border with Ukraine.

A statement from Poland’s military command read: “Some of the drones that entered our airspace were shot down.

Searches and efforts to locate the potential crash sites of these objects are ongoing.”

The defence ministry prompted civilians in the regions of Podlaskie, Mazowieckie and Lublin to remain indoors, warning, “This is an act of aggression that posed a real threat to the safety of our citizens.”

Prime Minister Donald Tusk, addressing the unfolding situation, confirmed that military operations were in motion and that he remained in “constant contact” with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.

A government spokesperson revealed that an exigency session of the Council of Ministers was listed for 8 a.m. original time.

Chopin Airport, Warsaw’s busiest hub, announced an immediate closure of its airspace, citing “military actions.”

Several breakouts initially fated for the capital were rerouted to Katowice, Wroclaw and Poznan airfields.

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration also verified temporary closures at four Polish airfields, including Rzeszów, Jasionka, a pivotal passage for aid and artillery into Ukraine.

Meanwhile, Ukraine’s air force reported that drones had crossed into Polish airspace, hanging over metropolises near the border.

This alert was later deleted from their sanctioned channels, but the seriousness of the breach wasn’t in doubt. Across the Atlantic, U.S. politicians weighed in.

Democratic Senator Dick Durbin said the repeated incursions by Russian drones signalled an attempt by President Vladimir Putin to “test NATO’s resolve.”

During Russia’s attacks on Ukraine today, a few Russian drones entered the territory of Poland. Polish PM Donald Tusk confirmed that Polish F-16s and NATO fighter jets shot down the drones over Poland’s territory.

“After the carnage Putin continues to visit on Ukraine, these incursions cannot be ignored,” he posted on social media.

Republican Representative Joe Wilson went further, calling it “an act of war” and urging immediate sanctions against Moscow.

“Putin is no longer content just losing in Ukraine while bombing mothers and babies; he is now directly testing our resolve in NATO territory,” Wilson wrote.

This week’s developments follow warnings from Western officers that Russia’s military conditioning, including common exercises with Belarus, is heightening pressures along NATO’s eastern flank.

Since a slapdash Ukrainian bullet struck a Polish vill in 2022, killing two civilians, Warsaw has been on edge regarding incursions.

However, until now, Polish and allied defence forces had not actively engaged Russian drones within their borders.

Poland also blazoned it would seal its border with Belarus as of night on Thursday, a palladium in response to Russian-led military drills.

Lithuania, too, has ramped up its border defences, citing heightened threats from the east.

Ben Hodges, former commander of U.S. Army forces in Europe, commented on the pattern of incursions, stating: “The number of incursions by Russian drones into NATO airspace makes it clear that these are intentional tests of NATO and national air defences and early warning systems.

We need to be able to respond effectively each time. We certainly could be doing more.”

As Warsaw stands firm, the world watches nearly. The extremity is far from over, and it may just be the morning.
