Norway Pledges Major Boost in Funding for Ukraine’s Air Defence
In a significant move, Norway has announced it is ready to increase its financial support for Ukraine’s air defence capabilities.
This was confirmed by Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre during a joint press conference with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Monday, 21 July.
“Norway is ready to provide significant additional funding for Ukraine’s air defense. And now we plan to do this in very direct cooperation with Germany, a very reliable partner in this matter,” Støre declared, signalling a strong commitment to the cause.
The Prime Minister also highlighted ongoing collaboration between Norwegian and German industries, which are actively producing air defence systems and missiles for Ukraine’s needs.
“We are also discussing how we can supply systems like the Patriot systems to Ukraine, which is extremely important,” he said, stressing the urgency of securing advanced defence technology for Kyiv.
However, Støre pointed out the need for further international support. “But for that, we also need more partners. So, we need the United States, and we count on the president, who has clearly indicated this, to quickly finalize an agreement to fulfill its role,” he added.
This announcement builds on Norway’s earlier pledge in February 2025, when it committed around $107 million to enhance Ukraine’s air defence.
The funds are intended for purchasing US-made air defence systems through the JUMPSTART programme. These efforts form part of Norway’s wider $2 billion military aid package for Ukraine this year under the Nansen Program.
In related news, German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius recently confirmed that Germany and the US have agreed to deliver five Patriot air defence systems to Ukraine, further bolstering Kyiv’s defensive capabilities.
This UK-based report underscores Norway’s growing role in supporting Ukraine amid ongoing conflict, reflecting broader Western cooperation in military aid efforts.
