A desperate search for 13-year-old Mylo Capilla, who was reported missing after entering the River Tees, has ended in heartbreak.
Mylo was last seen around 9pm on Thursday in an area known locally as the Muddies in Ingleby Barwick, Teesside. Emergency services launched a large-scale operation early Friday, scouring the river and surrounding areas for any sign of the teenager.
By Friday evening, Cleveland Police confirmed a devastating update. A police spokesperson stated: “Very sadly, police and partner agencies searching the river for 13-year-old Mylo Capilla at Ingleby Barwick have found the body of a boy.
“Whilst formal identification has yet to take place, Mylo’s parents have been informed and they continue to be supported by specially trained officers.
“All our thoughts are with Mylo’s family and friends as well as with the wider community at this extremely difficult time.”
Police had earlier reported that Mylo was thought to have gone to the river near Ramsey Gardens with a friend and entered the water.
Even more than 12 hours after the alarm was raised, the police helicopter remained in the air, circling a stretch of the Tees.
A cordon was set up in Ramsey Gardens, approximately 200 metres from the riverbank, to prevent public access to the search zone.
Cleveland Fire and Rescue Service personnel were also at the scene assisting in the search efforts.
Residents described the Muddies as a sprawling area along the river, often frequented by children and teenagers. One local commented that it’s a popular spot, especially during summer evenings.
The investigation into Mylo’s death remains ongoing. This heartbreaking incident has sent shockwaves through the community, as residents come to terms with the tragic loss of a young life.
