The close-knit community of Moy is in mourning following the passing of one of its most respected figures, funeral director Benny Martin, who died peacefully on Thursday, 24 October, at Craigavon Area Hospital, surrounded by his devoted family.
A Pillar of the Moy Community
Benny Martin, of Charlemont Road, was the face behind Benedict J. Martin & Son, one of the region’s most recognised and trusted funeral homes.
The business, founded in 1950 by his late father, Benedict J. Martin, has been a cornerstone of support and compassion for local families navigating grief and loss.
For decades, Benny carried that legacy with quiet dignity, offering not just a professional service but a deeply personal one. He had a way of making people feel seen and supported in their most vulnerable moments, a quality that defined both him and the family-run business.
“A Great Gentleman” Remembered
Since news of his passing, tributes have flooded in from near and far. The messages speak volumes about the man behind the name, a figure whose kindness left a lasting mark.
“Heartbroken to hear the sad news of a great gentleman who will be sadly missed. R.I.P. Benny, you were one in a million. Condolences to the family at this sad time.”
Others described him as “a great character” and “an absolute gentleman,” sentiments echoed across the community and beyond.
Loved by Many, Missed by All
Benny is remembered as the beloved husband of Maura, devoted father to Benedict and Maria, father-in-law to Stephen, and cherished grandfather to Dara and Jude.
He was the loving son of the late Benny and Anna Martin, and brother to Mary (Ashford), Francis, Sean, and the late Eugene.
The mark he left on the community isn’t just etched in memory; it lives on through every life he comforted, every family he served, and every quiet moment of understanding he offered.
Final Farewell Arrangements
Benny will repose at the family’s funeral home, Benedict J. Martin & Son, located at 11 Charlemont Road, Moy, from 11am to 9pm on Sunday.
His funeral will take place on Monday, with removal at 12:30pm for Requiem Mass at 1pm in St Peter’s Church, Collegeland, followed by interment in St John’s Cemetery, Benburb Road, Moy.
Legacy Beyond Business
What made Benny Martin truly special wasn’t just his role; it was the man himself. He brought compassion into every aspect of his work. His calm presence during emotional times, his understanding nature, and his ability to quietly lead people through the hardest days made him a figure of rare grace.
His impact stretches far beyond the Charlemont Road. Generations of families have turned to him in their darkest hours and found light, comfort, and care.
In a world that often moves too fast, Benny Martin stood still, steady, respectful, and ever-present. His passing marks the end of an era, but his legacy is set in the foundation of a community that will never forget him.
