Singer Katy Perry has revealed she will write a song inspired by her remarkable journey into space, marking a deeply personal and emotional milestone in her life.
The Grammy-nominated artist returned from Jeff Bezos’s Blue Origin space flight, visibly moved by the experience, which she described as life-affirming and full of love.
This Katy Perry space song is set to capture the emotions and insights she gained during her brief but powerful journey beyond Earth’s atmosphere.
Upon her return from the Blue Origin New Shepard NS-31 capsule, Perry, now 40, kissed the ground and held a daisy aloft in honour of her daughter, Daisy.
Accompanied by an all-female crew — including CBS Mornings host Gayle King, ex-rocket scientist Aisha Bowe, astronaut Amanda Nguyen, film producer Kerianne Flynn, and Lauren Sanchez, partner of Jeff Bezos — the singer launched into a heartfelt rendition of Louis Armstrong’s What A Wonderful World as they ascended into space.
As she stepped out of the capsule, Perry raised the daisy in a symbolic gesture to her daughter, before being greeted by Jeff Bezos himself. When he congratulated her, she responded with a simple: “Thank you.”
Following her safe landing, the Roar singer shared her reflections: “I feel super connected to love, so connected to love. I think this experience has shown me you never know how much love is inside of you, like how much love you have to give and how loved you are until the day you launch.”
Explaining the significance of the daisy, she added: “Daisies are common flowers, but they grow through any condition, they go through cement, they go through cracks, they go through walls, they are resilient. They are powerful, they are strong, they are everywhere.”
“Flowers are to me, god’s smile, but it’s also a reminder of our beautiful earth and the flowers here, and god’s smile and the beautiful magic that is everywhere, all around us and even in a simple daisy. So to really appreciate it and remember it and take care of it, protect it.”
Perry could be heard exclaiming “oh my god” as she blasted off, seen onboard the rocket just as it detached from the gantry at Blue Origin’s West Texas launch site.
On her musical choice, Perry explained: “I’ve covered that song in the past, and obviously my higher self is always steering the ship, because I had no clue that one day, I would decide to sing a little bit of that in space. But I think that it’s not about me, it’s not about singing my songs, it’s about a collective energy in there, it’s about us.”
“It’s about making space for future women and taking up space and belonging, and it’s about this wonderful world that we see right out there and appreciating it. This is all for the benefit of Earth.”
As the mission launched, flames erupted from the base of the rocket and the ground crew confirmed a successful ascent, describing the flight as looking “good”.
Upon reaching 28,000 feet, the capsule separated from the booster, giving the crew a fleeting moment of zero gravity and a view of the moon before descending back to Earth.
The entire mission lasted less than 20 minutes. The booster touched down on the launch pad while the crew capsule returned with parachutes, landing safely as excited cheers rang out. Perry’s daughter Daisy watched nearby as safety crews quickly approached.
Perry described the journey as: “Second to being a mum,” and confessed it was a challenge to leave her daughter, even for such a monumental occasion.
“I have to surrender and trust that the universe is going to take care of me and protect me, and also my family, my daughter, because I’m full up from being able to get that gift to be being a mum, and to go to space is incredible, and I wanted to model courage and worthiness and fearlessness.”
Reflecting on the trip, she said she would “absolutely recommend” the experience and revealed that she even finalised the setlist for her upcoming tour during the flight.
With a music career spanning over two decades, Katy Perry boasts five UK number-one singles and two number-one albums. Her latest release, 143, launched last year, was her first studio album in four years. With a new Katy Perry space song on the horizon, inspired by this celestial journey, fans can expect a powerful tribute to Earth, motherhood, and the human spirit.
