Ibiza Rocks Shuts Down Events Following Tragic Deaths of Two British Tourists
Ibiza Rocks has halted its live music schedule after two British men tragically died at the iconic San Antonio hotel and music venue within just two weeks.
The sudden deaths have left the popular party destination in shock. First came the heartbreaking news on 7 July, when 26-year-old Evan Thomson, from Scotland, fell to his death while holidaying with friends.
Then, just two weeks later, 19-year-old ice hockey talent Gary Kelly was found dead at the same venue.
Kelly, a rising star with the Dundee Stars, was described by his club as a “hugely talented and charismatic individual” with “a great future ahead of him.”
Tributes poured in across the UK ice hockey community, with teams like the Glasgow Clan and Whitley Warriors joining in mourning the young athlete’s untimely death.
In response, Ibiza Rocks Hotel announced an immediate suspension of upcoming music events. The decision, the venue said, was made “due to the seriousness of the situation and out of respect for those involved.”
In a statement, the hotel said: “We are deeply shocked and devastated by the recent incidents that have tragically occurred. Our priority is to support those affected and their loved ones during this incredibly difficult time, and to fully assist the authorities with their investigations.
The safety and wellbeing of our guests has, and always will remain, our highest priority.”
The cancellations affect several performances, including appearances by Dizzee Rascal and Rudimental, though exact event dates and reschedules remain unclear.
Thomson’s mother shared her grief on social media, writing: “I’m absolutely heartbroken to write and tell you all, earlier this week my son Evan was in a tragic accident whilst on holiday with his friends in Ibiza and sadly passed away… We are all absolutely broken.”
The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office confirmed it is supporting the bereaved families and is in contact with Spanish authorities.
Back home, Kelly’s passing has sent ripples through the UK’s ice hockey community.
The Dundee Stars released an emotional tribute, saying: “We send our thoughts and condolences to Gary’s family, partner, and all his friends at this extremely difficult time… Gary was hugely talented and charismatic… His loss will impact many in the ice hockey community and beyond. He will be sadly missed.”
Other teams echoed the sentiment. The Whitley Warriors noted that although Kelly only played a few matches with them during the 2023–24 season, “he was a popular player in the dressing room despite the shortness of his time at Whitley.”
Authorities in Ibiza are continuing their investigations into both incidents.
For now, the sun-soaked rhythms at Ibiza Rocks have fallen silent – replaced with reflection, grief, and unanswered questions.
