Explosion in Rome: Massive Petrol Station Blast Injures Over 20 This Morning
A terrifying explosion in Rome this morning has left at least 23 people injured, after a fuel truck reportedly struck a pipeline at a busy petrol station, triggering a huge fireball.
The incident unfolded at around 8:30 AM local time in the Cisterna di Latina area, just south of Rome. In an instant, roaring flames and dense black smoke shot high into the sky, visible from miles around, sending nearby residents and passersby scrambling in fear.
More than 100 firefighters and emergency responders rushed to the scene. According to local authorities, at least eight people suffered serious burns and were taken to nearby hospitals, while others were treated at the site for minor injuries and smoke inhalation.
Fortunately, there have been no reports of any fatalities at this time.
Eyewitness Marco Bianchi, who was at a nearby café, described the chaos: “It looked like hell. The noise was deafening, and the flames shot up like a wall, at least 20 metres high. Everyone was screaming and running. It was terrifying.”
Initial reports suggest that the explosion in Rome was caused when a fuel truck, delivering supplies, accidentally hit a petrol pipeline, which quickly ignited. Fire crews worked tirelessly for several hours to bring the blaze under control, while nearby buildings were evacuated as a precaution.
Rome’s mayor has called for an urgent safety review and a full investigation to determine exactly what went wrong. Authorities are asking people to stay away from the area while emergency teams continue their work.
For now, the city is left shaken, but grateful that the quick response likely prevented an even more tragic outcome.
