A delivery driver attack in the early hours of Monday morning has left a man injured and his vehicle completely destroyed in a deliberate arson incident in Creggan, Derry.
The terrifying ordeal unfolded around 2.10am, shortly after the driver left Rinmore Drive. He was flagged down by an unknown male, believed to be posing as a customer. Upon stopping and opening his car door, the man ignited an object and threw it into the vehicle before fleeing the scene.
Miraculously, the driver managed to escape the burning car. He sustained burn injuries to his hand and was later taken to the hospital for treatment. The vehicle was left completely gutted by the flames.
Detectives from the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) have described the assault as “reckless” and are urgently seeking witnesses or anyone with information about the delivery driver attack.
“This was a reckless attack and it’s sheer fortune the victim was able to get out of the car and make his way to safety. I urge anyone who has information about what happened and who is responsible to call us as your information could be key,” said Detective Inspector Gingell.
Authorities have asked members of the public to contact 101 quoting reference 84 of 10/06/25, or to make a report online.
This latest incident adds to growing concerns around attacks on delivery drivers, who are often out alone in the early hours. The PSNI is urging residents in the Rinmore Drive and Creggan areas to check any CCTV or dashcam footage that could assist in the investigation.
