Friends and family are desperately searching for British Paralympian Sam Ruddock, who has mysteriously disappeared while visiting Las Vegas. Described as having a “heart of gold,” the athlete was last heard from over a week ago, prompting growing fears for his safety.
Last Known Movements
Ruddock, a track cyclist from Rugby, Warwickshire, travelled to the United States on 13 April to attend a WrestleMania event. His loved ones reported that they last heard from him on 16 April. Concern escalated when no further contact was made, and his normally prolific online activity fell silent.
Lucy Hatton, a former athlete and close friend who once lived with Mr Ruddock, voiced her concern:
“Something just wasn’t right because Sam was so overwhelming on social media,” she said.
“He’s the type of person who wants to share his passions, and he loves sport,” she added, calling him a “tremendous human being.”
Family and Authorities Take Action
Mr Ruddock, who lives with cerebral palsy, is a father to a two-and-a-half-year-old son. His mother, Fran Ruddock, has reportedly spoken with police as efforts to locate him intensify.
Lincolnshire Police confirmed that an active investigation into missing persons is underway. Meanwhile, the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) is liaising with authorities in the United States.
An FCDO spokesperson said: “We are supporting the family of a British man reported missing in Las Vegas and are in contact with the local authorities.” A media outlet reached out to Las Vegas’ Metropolitan Police Department for further comment.
Ms Hatton revealed that Mr Ruddock had been staying at a hostel called the Bungalows in Las Vegas. He checked in on 14 April and was meant to check out the following day. However, he never officially checked out, and his belongings were left behind.
Adding to the concern, Mr Ruddock had faced severe mental health challenges in the past year. He battled depression but had been receiving support from British Cycling, friends, and family.
“He had a heart of gold,” Ms Hatton stressed. “I just want Sam to know that no one’s angry, if you’ve gone off grid because you need time for yourself, absolutely just let someone know that you’re okay,” she added.
British Cycling Issues Statement
British Cycling released a statement acknowledging Mr Ruddock’s disappearance. A spokesperson said: “We understand Mr Ruddock was reported missing to UK and US police and Interpol after not being heard from since Wednesday 16th April 2025, while visiting Las Vegas, USA.”
They urged: “We urge anyone who has been in contact with Sam since 16th April or may have any information of his whereabouts to contact their local police department as soon as possible.”
As the search for Sam Ruddock continues, his family, friends, and the wider sporting community remain hopeful for his safe return. Anyone with information is urged to step forward and assist authorities in this critical time.
