Bristol Balloon Fiesta: Green Smoke Signals Morning Mass Ascent on Day Two

The skies above Bristol have come alive this morning as the 47th annual Bristol International Balloon Fiesta entered its second day of colourful festivities.

At exactly 6am, a plume of green smoke drifted into the air, sparking cheers from the crowd, the official signal for the much-anticipated morning mass ascent.

Dozens of hot air balloons began to swell and lift into the early light, drifting gracefully on a south-westerly breeze.

Unlike yesterday, when balloons floated over South Bristol, today’s wind is steering them north-east, gliding over Clifton, crossing North Bristol, and potentially touching down on the Downs. Some pilots may even stretch their flight paths towards Filton and the M32 corridor.

“Yes, we’re going to see a mass ascent today!” came the announcement, met with applause as the first balloon soared skyward.

The event, free to attend, draws thousands each year and is a staple of Bristol’s summer calendar.

This morning’s ascent is just the start of a packed day, with another lift-off planned for 6pm, weather willing, followed by the final Night Glow of 2025 at 9pm, when balloons will light up in sync to music in a breathtaking display.

Beyond the balloons, the fiesta’s grounds are buzzing with activity. Families can wander through model balloon displays, try out yoga on the lawn, climb aboard a real fire engine, and meet police dog and motorcycle display teams.

There’s even the rare chance to step inside a full-sized balloon envelope or meet seasoned pilots in person. Aviation fans will also be treated to a flypast from a Hawker Hurricane fighter plane, a nod to Britain’s wartime history.

Friday night’s scheduled mass ascent was scrapped due to high winds, though visitors still enjoyed tethered balloons glowing in the arena. Today’s clear skies and favourable winds have brought a welcome change, with pilots and spectators alike savouring the perfect flying conditions.

Those who missed the opening spectacle can revisit yesterday’s launch highlights, which set the tone for this weekend’s celebrations.

As the morning unfolds, vibrant balloons of every shape and shade continue to dot Bristol’s skyline, a scene that captures the heart of the city every August.
