A horrifying Blackstone shooting incident unfolded at a prestigious Manhattan skyscraper on Monday evening, leaving four people dead and one critically injured.
The gunman, later identified as Shane Tamura, 27, took his own life after carrying out the attack inside 345 Park Avenue – the building that houses the headquarters of Blackstone, the National Football League (NFL), and other top financial firms.
Off-Duty NYPD Officer Among the Victims
Among those killed was NYPD officer Didarul Islam, a father of two with a third child on the way. He was working an off-duty job as a security guard when the shooter opened fire.
Mayor Eric Adams described him as a “true blue hero”, acknowledging his dedication and bravery.
Three additional victims – two men and a woman – were confirmed dead. A fourth man remains in critical condition in the hospital, according to the mayor.
Gunman Travelled from Las Vegas
New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said the gunman, Tamura, had driven cross-country from Las Vegas, making stops in several US states before arriving in New Jersey just hours before the attack.
He had a known history of mental illness, officials said.
Attack Unfolded Inside Blackstone Headquarters
The Blackstone shooting began during the evening rush hour when Tamura exited a double-parked black BMW and entered the skyscraper’s lobby on Park Avenue. He immediately opened fire, killing multiple people.
One woman was allowed to exit the lift unharmed before the attacker went up to the 33rd floor – home to Rudin Management Company – where he fatally shot another victim. He then entered a stairwell and shot himself using an assault rifle.
A quiet evening turned to panic inside one of New York’s most secure corporate buildings when a lone gunman launched a deadly rampage in what is now known as the Blackstone shooting – a chilling reminder of rising gun violence even in America’s most guarded spaces.

Police later found weapons and a prescription in Tamura’s name inside the BMW. Authorities confirmed he acted alone and described the shooting as an isolated incident.
The NFL issued an internal lockdown alert during the incident: “Do not exit the building. Secure your location and hide until law enforcement clears your floor. Please switch phones to silent,” according to ESPN reporter Jeff Darlington.
Russ McGee, 31, who was exercising in a gym near the scene, told Reuters: “I just saw a lot of commotion and cops and people screaming.”
Photos taken around 7pm local time showed dozens of people exiting the building with their hands raised.
The Blackstone shooting marks the 254th mass shooting in the US so far this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive. The group defines a mass shooting as an incident where four or more people are shot, excluding the shooter.
US House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries responded with a message of support: “May God watch over our city during this challenging moment.”
