Three teenagers have been charged with attempted murder following a shocking knife attack that left a 15-year-old boy seriously injured in a Sunderland park.
Boy, 15, stabbed in Herrington Country Park
Emergency services were called to Margaret Terrace, near Herrington Country Park, around 6:10pm on Friday after reports of an injured teenager. Officers arrived alongside ambulance crews and found the boy with serious wounds consistent with a bladed weapon attack.
According to Northumbria Police, two boys aged 16 and a 15-year-old girl have now been charged with attempted murder. All three remain in custody and are expected to appear before South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court on Monday.
The identities of the teenagers have not been disclosed due to legal protections around their age.
Victim is in stable condition as police investigate motive
The victim is currently being treated in the hospital, where his condition is described as stable. His injuries, though serious, are not believed to be life-threatening.
Initial enquiries indicate that the boy was assaulted within the grounds of Herrington Country Park, a popular public space often frequented by families and visitors.
Chief Superintendent Nicola Walker offered reassurances to the local community on Saturday, stating: “Our officers remain in the area to offer reassurance and investigate, which involves some search activity within Herrington Country Park. While inquiries remain at an early stage, it is believed some of those involved could be known to each other.”
She urged potential witnesses to come forward: “We know this is a high footfall area and it’s likely there were lots of people in and around the park at the time of the incident. If you were in the area or you witnessed anything, then please reach out and share any details with us as soon as possible.”
The news has sent ripples through the New Herrington community. Herrington Country Park, typically known for its scenic paths and community events, is now at the centre of a major police investigation.
Local residents have expressed concern over the nature of the attack and the ages of those involved.
