Andy Robertson will stay at Liverpool after the club pulled out of talks with Tottenham Hotspur over a possible move for the veteran full-back, according to Press Association sources.

Liverpool made the decision earlier this week after considering their squad depth, current injury concerns, and the club’s ongoing campaigns.

Tottenham approached Liverpool late last week as new head coach Thomas Frank looked to add experience to his squad, but the Merseyside club chose not to progress negotiations.

The decision affects both clubs at a key stage of the season and keeps one of Liverpool’s most experienced players at Anfield.

Why did Tottenham want Andy Robertson?

Tottenham identified Andy Robertson as a short-term solution to add leadership and Premier League experience to their defence.

Thomas Frank, under pressure to stabilise Spurs’ season, made a late move for the Scotland captain last week.

Spurs viewed Robertson’s contract situation, which expires in summer 2025, as an opportunity to secure an experienced left-back without a long-term commitment.

Robertson, who turns 32 in March, has won every major trophy with Liverpool and brings a Champions League pedigree that Tottenham currently lack.

Why did Liverpool pull out of the talks?

Liverpool listened to Tottenham’s approach out of respect for Robertson’s eight-and-a-half years of service and his contract situation. However, the club ultimately decided the timing was wrong.

Several key factors influenced the decision:

  • Liverpool remains in contention for the Champions League and FA Cup
  • Defensive injuries have stretched squad depth
  • Robertson did not request a move
  • Leadership is concerned with senior players unavailable

According to the Press Association, Liverpool formally withdrew from talks after internal discussions about squad stability.

How important is Andy Robertson to Liverpool right now?

Despite starting only four Premier League matches this season, Andy Robertson still plays a key role under head coach Arne Slot.

Premier League 4 Rotation role
Champions League 4 Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Inter Milan
Domestic Cups Limited Squad rotation

Robertson replaced Milos Kerkez at half-time during Saturday’s defeat at Bournemouth. Slot later confirmed Kerkez was withdrawn due to being in the “red zone”, a term used by Liverpool’s sports science staff to describe heightened injury risk.

What injury problems are Liverpool facing?

Liverpool’s defensive options have been hit hard in recent weeks:

  • Conor Bradley – season-ending injury
  • Giovanni Leoni – season-ending injury
  • Joe Gomez – knee knock (assessment ongoing)
  • Ibrahima Konaté – absent following the death of his father

With these absences, Robertson’s experience and versatility have become increasingly valuable.

What have Liverpool figures said about Robertson’s future?

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk made his stance clear after the Bournemouth match. “I don’t want Robbo to leave. He’s a massive part of this team,” van Dijk said.

Head coach Arne Slot also stressed the importance of keeping his squad together. “I want to keep all my players. We’re still fighting on multiple fronts,” Slot said.

These comments reinforced Liverpool’s internal position and helped shut down speculation over a January exit.

Did Andy Robertson want to leave Liverpool?

No. Sources close to the situation confirm Andy Robertson did not ask for a move.

The Scotland captain remains committed to Liverpool and continues to feature in big European matches, even when rotated domestically. His vice-captaincy status also underlines his standing within the squad.
