Red Devils Set Sights on Belgian Stopper as Onana Faces Six-Week Layoff
Manchester United are ready to ramp up their pursuit of Royal Antwerp goalkeeper Senne Lammens, as the club looks to reinforce their squad before the upcoming season kicks off.
While much of the summer has so far revolved around their relentless chase for Bryan Mbeumo, with two failed bids behind them, United submitted an improved offer on Thursday, believed to be worth £70 million. Optimism is now high that Brentford will finally greenlight the move.
With their attack seemingly close to being strengthened, attention has quickly shifted to other areas, particularly the goalkeeping department.
As reported by talkSPORT, the Red Devils are “in the hunt” for a new goalkeeper following a fresh injury blow to first-choice Andre Onana. The Cameroonian has picked up a hamstring injury and is set to be sidelined for approximately six weeks, ruling him out of United’s pre-season tour.
That development has opened the door for the club to target 23-year-old Senne Lammens, whose performances for Royal Antwerp have turned heads across Europe. Known for his calm demeanour and lightning reflexes, Lammens has become one of the most highly-rated young stoppers in Belgium.
Antwerp reportedly value their number one at around £17 million, a figure that makes him a realistic option for United, whether as immediate cover or long-term competition for Onana.
Back in February, the Belgian under-21 international reacted positively to reports of United’s interest.
He called it “special”, a comment which suggests he’d be open to making the move to Old Trafford if terms can be agreed between the two clubs.
His contract runs until the summer of 2027, giving Antwerp plenty of leverage. Still, United appear undeterred in their interest. Lammens isn’t the only name being considered.
Manchester United have also been linked with Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez. The World Cup winner is understood to be keen on a switch to the red side of Manchester, though reports indicate he “will not move” if Onana remains part of the squad.
With Martinez valued at £40 million, it’s clear United would need to make a substantial commitment to land the Argentine.
As the club closes in on their top attacking target, the focus is expected to stay sharp on solving their goalkeeping dilemma. Whether it’s the promising Lammens or the proven Martinez, United look set to bolster their ranks before the season opener.
Fans can expect movement soon, and it’s clear that Erik ten Hag isn’t willing to leave any holes unfilled ahead of what promises to be a crucial campaign.
