Passengers are advised to plan ahead as rail services are diverted and replaced during essential improvements

Huddersfield railway station is set to close for a full month this summer as part of a significant phase in the ongoing Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU). The closure, lasting from 30 August to 29 September, will see all rail services suspended through the station while crucial engineering works take place.

During the 30-day shutdown, no trains will operate through Huddersfield station, with replacement bus services and alternative rail routes arranged to keep passengers moving.

Network Rail confirmed that once the station reopens, only three platforms will be operational temporarily, allowing construction to progress safely around the remaining areas.

This large-scale work forms a vital part of the multi-billion-pound TRU programme, designed to modernise the railway infrastructure across the North of England.

Gareth Hope, sponsor for the TRU project, emphasised the importance of the upgrade, saying it is “key to improving the journeys of millions of people across the north.”

According to Network Rail, the station’s track and platform layout will be completely reconfigured, paving the way for increased train capacity, improved reliability, and a greener mode of transport.

The improvements are expected to provide longer trains with more seating and enhanced punctuality for passengers travelling through the region.

The temporary closure also allows for further enhancements, including the future installation of a new footbridge and the restoration of Huddersfield’s historic Grade II listed tea rooms—a cherished feature of the station.

Part of the station’s canopy roof has already been refurbished, marking the early stages of the revitalisation.

Mr Hope described the upcoming work as “one of the most important projects across the entire TRU programme,” noting the 30-day pause will “allow us to take a giant leap towards giving the station a deserved makeover without harming its heritage.”

Brighouse Station to Act as Main Access Point

During the closure period, Brighouse railway station will serve as the primary gateway to Huddersfield, offering onward connections and facilities to support affected passengers. Project representatives are encouraging travellers to check their routes in advance and make use of the replacement services provided.

Summary of Key Dates and Changes

Key Information Details
Closure Dates 30 August – 29 September 2025
Affected Station Huddersfield
Replacement Services Bus services and diversionary rail routes
Temporary Reopening Three platforms to reopen post-closure
Alternative Travel Hub Brighouse railway station

Passengers are advised to plan their journeys in advance and stay informed via Network Rail and train operator websites.

The Huddersfield station upgrade is a vital part of a wider investment into northern rail travel, aiming to deliver a more efficient, reliable, and environmentally sustainable transport network for generations to come.
