ITV has positioned itself at the centre of contestation after publicizing Alison Hammond as the new host of For the Love of Dogs, following the end of cherished presenter Paul O’Grady.

Numerous observers have expressed disappointment over the relief, sparking heated debate online.

Alison Hammond Joins For the Love of Dogs

Alison Hammond, long-time This Morning favourite, assumed hosting duties in 2024, nearly a year after O’Grady’s death in March 2023.

ITV confirmed her as the show’s new face in January, shortly after the late presenter’s final season aired posthumously in April 2023.

The move has left some fans uneasy. Social media was awash with comments lamenting the rapid transition and fearing O’Grady’s legacy might be overshadowed.

Remembering Paul O’Grady

Malcolm Prince, a close friend and producer of Paul O’Grady, offered his perspective on the shift.

“Paul would have accepted the show’s continuation without objection. He was humble and genuinely cared for animals, particularly at Battersea Dogs & Cats Home,” Prince said.

Prince praised Hammond’s personality, humour, and presenting capacities, but expressed concern about the timing of the show’s return.

The late television presenter was famed for his warmth, quick wit, and inexhaustible advocacy for beasts’ welfare. His work at Battersea Dogs & Pussycats Home remains a highlight of his career, endearing him to millions of observers across the UK.

New Book on Paul O’Grady

Adding to the public’s reflection on O’Grady’s life, Malcolm Prince is releasing a new book, Paul O’Grady: Not the Same without You, on 6 November.

The book promises:

  • Never-before-told stories of O’Grady.
  • Insights into his relationships within the entertainment industry.
  • Details of his unexpected friendship with the Queen.
  • Anecdotes surrounding his departure from the BBC.
  • Light-hearted ghost stories and personal recollections.

Prince hopes the book will allow suckers to reconnect with O’Grady’s personality and benefactions beyond his TV career.

The debate over Alison Hammond’s part highlights the continuing influence of Paul O’Grady on British TV.

While opinions differ, one thing remains clear, O’Grady’s heritage as a cherished presenter and advocate for creatures continues to reverberate with cult nationwide.
