It was another rough night for Republicans, and Donald Trump didn’t take it quietly.
The former president reacted in trademark fashion, loud, defensive, and in all caps. Taking to his Truth Social platform, Trump posted what he claimed was the explanation behind the Republican Party’s bruising defeat.
“‘TRUMP WASN’T ON THE BALLOT, AND SHUTDOWN, WERE THE TWO REASONS THAT REPUBLICANS LOST ELECTIONS TONIGHT,’ according to Pollsters,” he wrote.
But early indicators tell a different story. Exit polls reveal that numerous Americans used their vote to reject Trump himself.
According to CNN, a significant number of voters cited dissatisfaction with his former time in office as their main provocation at the ballot box.
The GOP faced broad losses across multiple states. Democrat Abigail Spanberger captured Virginia’s governor’s mansion, an emblematic and strategic blow to Republicans.
In New Jersey, Democrat Mikie Sherrill fenced off a tough race, keeping the governor’s office forcefully blue.

And in New York City, the results were just as damning. Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani pulled off a commanding victory over Independent Andrew Cuomo, a candidate who, notably, had received Trump’s last-minute backing.
Across the board, Democrats racked up wins in smaller yet telling contests, too. They secured the Pennsylvania State Supreme Court majority, retained control of Virginia’s House of Delegates, and even picked up two vital seats on Georgia’s Public Service Commission.
For a night that was supposed to herald a Democratic rejuvenescence ahead of 2026, the outcome rather painted a clear picture that Trump’s influence remains divisive.
Judges suggest that the former chairman’s brewing shadow and his turndown to let go of the limelight may have brought his party dearly.
Numerous within the GOP are now still questioning whether his brand of politics is getting more liability than heritage.
Still, Trump shows no sign of introspection. His post was pure Trump, bold, defensive, and unrepentant.
The political world will now watch closely to see whether this latest Republican setback fuels further division within the party, or if Trump doubles down once more.
