DWP PIP Payment Increase: Claimants Could Boost Support by Over £630 a Month
Thousands of Personal Independence Payment (PIP) recipients could be in line for a major boost to their benefits, in some cases, over £630 more every month, if their health needs have increased.
Figures released by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) reveal that as of late April, around 420,000 people in England and Wales were having their PIP claims reviewed. That includes 380,000 award reassessments and 40,000 cases linked to changes in circumstances.
Currently, over 3.7 million people rely on PIP to help manage the extra costs linked to disabilities, long-term illnesses, and mental or physical health conditions. But a significant number may not be receiving the maximum available rates.
Big differences in payment rates
PIP is split into two parts, daily living and mobility. Each has a standard and enhanced rate. Depending on a claimant’s circumstances, they can receive one or both components and either rate.
Weekly payments range from £29.20 to £187.45. This works out to £116.80 to £749.80 every four weeks.
Someone receiving the standard mobility rate of £116.80 a month could see this leap to £749.80 if they qualify for enhanced rates on both components. That’s an extra £633 a month, or nearly £9,750 a year in 2025/26.
Similarly, a claimant currently on the standard rate for both components (£412.40 every four weeks) who moves up to enhanced rates across the board would gain £337.40 extra each month, totalling over £4,380 a year.
However, the DWP stresses that no two cases are identical.
“As the assessment principles consider the impact of a claimant’s condition on their ability to live independently and not the condition itself, claimants with the same condition may get different outcomes. The outcome is based on an independent assessment and all available evidence.”
Change in circumstances — what counts?
Guidance from GOV.UK says claimants should inform the DWP if:
- They need more or less help with daily living or mobility tasks
- a healthcare professional says their condition will last for a different length of time than originally reported
- their condition has worsened, and they are not expected to live for more than 12 months

While an updated assessment could lead to a higher award, it can also work the other way, payments might drop or stop altogether. That’s why independent advice from services like Citizens Advice is strongly recommended before contacting the DWP.
