Erskine Bridge Closure: Major Disruption This Weekend

Erskine Bridge Closure: Major Weekend Disruption for Northbound Drivers

Motorists are being urged to brace for significant disruption this weekend as the Erskine Bridge closure will see all northbound lanes shut from Friday night through to Monday morning.

The essential works, involving resurfacing and joint replacements on the M898, were initially planned for last month. However, soaring summer temperatures forced a delay. The project now begins at 8pm this Friday, with a full northbound closure lasting until 6am Monday.

Southbound traffic won’t escape unscathed either. One lane will be closed, causing likely delays. With the bridge spanning the River Clyde being such a vital route, drivers are being warned to plan ahead, reroute where possible, and expect longer journeys.

Contractor Amey will deliver the works for Transport Scotland.

A spokesperson confirmed: “Road users are advised to plan their journey times accordingly, seek alternative routes or follow the standard, agreed diversions while the works are taking place. The southbound A898 Erskine Bridge will operate under a single lane closure.

“Emergency service access has been agreed and will be maintained in coordination with relevant parties.

These works represent an investment of around £100,000 in the infrastructure of the A898 Erskine Bridge and will improve the condition of the bridge joints and the road surface, increasing reliability and safety and ensuring the continued operation of the bridge and reducing the need for more extensive or disruptive works in the future.”

This closure comes at a time when many families are still making summer trips across Scotland. Locals and regular commuters have already voiced frustration on social media, warning others about expected congestion around diversion routes.

Transport bosses stress that the short-term inconvenience will deliver long-term benefits. With the bridge’s ageing joints and surface in need of urgent care, the works are designed to prevent more severe and more disruptive repairs later on.

For now, the advice is clear. Check your route. Leave early. Expect queues. And if you’re heading north this weekend, the Erskine Bridge won’t be an option.
