Mercury vs Fever: Phoenix Demolish Indiana in 95-60 Rout
The Phoenix Mercury left no room for doubt on Thursday night, dismantling the Indiana Fever 95-60 at PHX Arena and stretching their winning streak to three games.
Alyssa Thomas stole the headlines, etching her name into WNBA history as the first player to record three triple-doubles in consecutive matches. Her stat line? A blistering 18 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists.
Speaking to Amazon Prime after the game, Thomas emphasised the team’s defensive grit. “We are super dangerous,” Thomas said. “We lost to (the Fever) a week ago, but today was about us and our defence.”
DeWanna Bonner lit up the scoreboard with 23 points against her former side, sending the home crowd into raptures. Waived by the Fever earlier in the season, Bonner’s return to Phoenix has clearly reignited her fire. Reflecting on her Indiana stint, she simply admitted things “did not work out”.
The tension didn’t end there. Exchanges between Bonner and ex-teammate Sophie Cunningham added a spicy edge to the night. Cunningham, now with Indiana after six years in Phoenix, led her team with 18 points.
The Fever had no answer for Phoenix’s relentless pace. In the first quarter, Satou Sabally was razor-sharp, hitting all her shots for eight early points.
Thomas chipped in with six, alongside rebounds, assists, and steals, helping Phoenix to a 26-16 lead. At half-time, Sabally and Thomas had 10 points each, with Bonner’s bench burst extending the cushion to 47-36.
The third quarter was the breaking point. Phoenix went on a devastating 19-2 run, crushing any hopes of an Indiana comeback and stretching the lead to 73-47. By the final whistle, the Mercury had closed it out in style, sealing a commanding 95-60 victory.
The Fever’s slump deepens, two defeats in a row following a five-game winning streak.
Indiana was once again without star guard Caitlin Clark, who missed her ninth straight game with a groin strain suffered in mid-July. There’s still no confirmed date for her return, though she continues to support her teammates from the bench.
Fever veteran Sydney Colson also suffered a setback, leaving the game with a left leg injury after chasing down a loose ball near her team’s bench. She was helped off the court and ruled out for the remainder of the match.
