UK Weather Forecast: Heatwave Set to Intensify With Possible Red Alert This Weekend
The weather in Cyprus continues its intense streak, with scorching temperatures and fierce winds making headlines again. Forecasters are warning of a significant rise in temperatures, potentially hitting an extreme high of 45°C over the weekend, a level that could trigger a red weather warning.
Today’s mercury has already reached 37°C inland, accompanied by gusty winds and dry conditions. And that’s just the beginning.
“A seasonal low pressure continues to affect the island,” said the Department of Meteorology, noting that the heatwave will intensify further in the coming days.
“The heatwave is expected to return over the next few days, as the Department of Meteorology has warned of 40-plus temperatures over the weekend and through to Tuesday, before a hot air mass goes through the island.”
Experts are on high alert. The Forestry Department has raised the fire risk to red alert as low humidity levels make vegetation across the island highly flammable. It’s a dangerous combination, dry air, high heat, and strong winds. A recipe for potential wildfires.
Conditions today were sweltering but not yet at their peak. Skies remained mostly clear, though partial cloud cover was seen at intervals.
Winds started off light to moderate from the southwest to northwest, gradually strengthening to force four and five, even force six in some southwestern coastal zones. Seas ranged from calm to slightly choppy, depending on the area.
Temperature-wise, inland areas hit the highest, 37°C, while coastal areas varied, with the west and southwest hovering around 30°C, and 34°C elsewhere along the coast. Mountain regions stayed slightly cooler at 30°C.
Tonight promises to be another warm one. Light clouds are expected in the western and northern coastal zones, with a thin morning mist likely. Winds will ease slightly, shifting to variable directions, but will mostly stay light to moderate. Temperatures will dip to 24°C inland and along the coast, and 20°C in the mountains.
And tomorrow? Similar story. Hot. Dry. Breezy. But all eyes are on the weekend.
“Things get significantly hotter, much higher than the seasonal average, with a possible red warning for high temperatures, as mercury will climb to 44, possibly 45.”
That’s well above normal for this time of year, and could prove dangerous if precautions aren’t taken. Residents and tourists alike are urged to stay hydrated, avoid direct sunlight during peak hours, and follow guidance from health and emergency authorities.
