A 69-year-old woman accused of killing two men outside a Lexington library has pleaded not guilty, as the case sends shockwaves through the quiet Kentucky community.

Deborah Weiss appeared remotely in court on Monday, dialling in from Fayette County Detention Centre. She faces two murder charges after an early-morning shooting outside the Northside branch of Lexington Public Library on Russell Cave Road.

Incident Unfolds in Early Hours

Police were alerted to the scene around 3:20 am on Saturday, 2 August. Officers responding to reports of gunfire discovered two men suffering from gunshot wounds. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

The victims have since been identified by the Fayette County Coroner’s Office as 52-year-old Edward Parker and 71-year-old Ashim Heanacho, both residents of Lexington.

“Weiss was arrested on-site and is currently being held on a $1 million bond.” During Monday’s arraignment, the court confirmed she will be represented by a public defender. Her next appearance is set for Monday, 11 August at 8:30 am.

Ongoing Investigation

At this stage, authorities have not disclosed a motive, and the circumstances leading up to the fatal shooting remain unclear. Police continue to investigate and have urged anyone with information to come forward.

Shock and Sorrow in the Community

The shooting, which occurred near a public library often frequented by local families and students, has left many in the community shaken. Locals have expressed disbelief over the violence erupting in a place known for its tranquillity.

Two lives were cut short in the early hours of Saturday morning in a quiet Lexington neighbourhood, as police investigate what led to the deadly shooting. With the suspect in custody and pleading not guilty, the community awaits answers and justice. Further updates are expected as the investigation progresses.
