Anthony Albanese Urges Immediate Two-State Solution Amid Gaza Crisis
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has made a renewed, urgent appeal for a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict, calling it essential to ending what he labelled a “humanitarian catastrophe” in Gaza.
The remarks come amid rising international concern over the deepening crisis in the region. In a bold and direct statement issued Friday, Albanese didn’t mince words.
“Israel’s denial of aid and the killing of civilians, including children, seeking access to water and food cannot be defended or ignored,” he declared.
The Prime Minister was clear in expressing solidarity with both the Israeli and Palestinian peoples, but stressed that the current trajectory could not continue.
Albanese acknowledged Australia’s historic support for Israel, saying the country was “proud to have strongly supported the creation of the modern state of Israel.” Yet, he insisted that recognition of Palestinian aspirations is equally vital.
“Recognising the legitimate aspirations of the Palestinian people for a state of their own has long been a bipartisan position in Australia,” the statement continued.
“The reason a two-state solution remains the goal of the international community is because a just and lasting peace depends upon it.”
This statement marks one of the strongest recent Australian government interventions in the Israel-Gaza debate.
He reiterated that Australia opposes any attempts to permanently displace Palestinians, a sentiment reflecting global concerns about the long-term humanitarian impact of the conflict.
“Any proposals for the permanent forced displacement of the Palestinian population must be abandoned,” he stated.
Albanese also condemned Hamas’ violence and called for the safe release of hostages still held. “We continue to support all international efforts to facilitate a ceasefire, recognising that an immediate and permanent ceasefire gives the best hope of bringing hostages home and easing the agony of their loved ones.”
The Australian leader’s remarks come just days after French President Emmanuel Macron said France would recognise a Palestinian state as early as September, adding momentum to diplomatic moves pushing for long-term peace.
Albanese didn’t shy away from stressing the urgency. “The urgency today is to end the war in Gaza and to provide aid to the civilian population. Peace is possible,” he said.
His words echo what many in the global diplomatic community are now voicing, that time is running out to protect lives, restore order, and push both sides towards a sustainable resolution.
As UK foreign policy observers watch global powers weigh in, Albanese’s statement is likely to amplify pressure on Western allies to take a clearer stance on the Israel-Palestine issue, particularly on humanitarian grounds
