Welsh Labour MS Hefin David Dies Suddenly, First Minister Confirms
Welsh Labour has been struck by tragedy with the sudden death of Hefin David, the party’s Member of the Senedd (MS) for Caerphilly. Eluned Morgan, the First Minister of Wales, paid tribute to the long-serving politician.
“We are extremely saddened by the sudden death of Hefin. Our thoughts are with his family at this terrible time.
“Hefin was a much-loved member of the Labour family. He served Caerphilly as a councillor and a Member of the Senedd with pride and passion.
“He was an outstanding politician, warm and enthusiastic and a great communicator – especially on behalf of his constituents. He will be greatly missed.”
Born and raised in Caerphilly, Mr David had a deep connection to the area he represented. His political career began in 2007 when he was elected to Caerphilly County Borough Council in a by-election.
Alongside his public service, Mr David was a senior lecturer at Cardiff Metropolitan University, teaching human resource management and professional practice to both undergraduate and postgraduate students.
In 2016, he succeeded Jeff Cuthbert as the Labour MS for Caerphilly, after Cuthbert was appointed as the police and crime commissioner for Gwent.
Hefin David’s passing leaves a profound void in Welsh Labour. Colleagues and constituents alike remember him as passionate, approachable, and committed to the people he served.
This news comes as a shock to the Welsh political community, marking a sombre moment for the party in the lead-up to upcoming local and national engagements.
