Victoria line chaos: Major disruption hits commuters amid Stockwell fire alert and signal failures
Victoria line passengers faced serious disruption during the Thursday morning rush as services ground to a halt following a fire alert at Stockwell.
Transport for London (TfL) confirmed the incident triggered “severe delays due to an earlier fire alert at Stockwell. Tickets are being accepted on London Buses, Weaver Line, Suffragette Line, Great Northern, South Western Railway and Southeastern.”
Commuters reported packed platforms, with many scrambling for alternative routes. A post from @tootingnewsie on X showed the chaotic scene at Clapham Common, which was reportedly evacuated around 10am. The accompanying image displayed an overcrowded platform, highlighting the scale of the disruption.
But the Victoria line wasn’t the only one crippled. The Northern line was also thrown into disarray.
TfL stated: “No service between Kennington and Morden and SEVERE DELAYS on the rest of the line while we fix a signal failure at Clapham South. Tickets are being accepted on London Buses, London Trams, Southeastern, Thameslink and South Western Railway.”
To add to the capital’s transit troubles, the Piccadilly line joined the list of affected services. A signal failure at North Ealing forced a partial suspension.
“No service between Acton Town and Uxbridge while we fix a signal failure at North Ealing. Tickets are being accepted on London Buses. GOOD SERVICE on the rest of the line,” TfL said.
Londoners expressed frustration as delays spilled into late morning. While services are being gradually restored, TfL has not yet given a full timeline for normal operations.
Travellers are urged to check live updates and consider alternate routes where possible.
