UK Weather Update: When Will the Warm Weather Return After September’s Downpour?
Britain’s weather has been all over the place lately. After weeks of dry spells during summer, September began with heavy rain and gusty winds sweeping in from the Atlantic. But relief may be on the horizon.
Forecasts now suggest warmer, drier days are making their way back, with temperatures climbing into the mid-20s Celsius before the month’s end.
A Wet Start to Autumn
The first half of September has been anything but predictable. Many parts of the UK welcomed much-needed rain after enduring a parched spring and sweltering summer.
Stormy conditions, driven by low-pressure systems from the Atlantic Ocean, have led to frequent showers, strong winds, and occasional downpours.
Weather models from WXCharts indicate that while showers and breezy conditions are expected through midweek, a shift towards warmer weather is likely from Monday, 15 September.
“The Midlands could see temperatures reaching the mid-20Cs, while most of England is expected to hover around 20°C,” reports WXCharts.
“However, Scotland and the western coastlines may stay cooler, with temperatures dipping into high single figures.”
Sunshine on the Way?
The Met Office confirms this outlook in its latest forecast for 12–21 September.
“This period is likely to start out unsettled, with low pressure dominating the pattern. This will mean showers or longer spells of rain will affect most of the UK at times,” it states.
“Some heavy rain or showers are expected in places, most often in the west and north.
Thunderstorms and hail are also possible, as are some spells of strong winds, especially if any deep areas of low pressure develop and affect the UK.”
However, there’s hope on the horizon. “Later in the period, there may be some longer spells of drier weather that develop, especially towards the south, with more in the way of sunshine due to higher pressure.
Temperatures will likely be close to average or slightly below overall, but may rise above at times in any drier, sunnier spells.”
This means Brits in southern and central England could enjoy pockets of Indian summer conditions, bright skies and comfortable temperatures after weeks of unsettled weather.
What’s Coming in Late September?
Looking ahead, the weather outlook from 22 September through 6 October suggests a mixed bag once more. “This period is likely to be changeable,” says the Met Office.
“Areas of low pressure are likely at times, especially towards the north of the UK.
These will bring spells of rain and showers, some of which are likely to be heavy with a risk of hail and thunder, and some windy conditions, especially if any deep lows form.”
But it’s not all gloom. “Some drier, more settled spells are also likely, perhaps more particularly early in the period when higher pressure may be more dominant, especially towards the south.
Temperatures are likely to be close to or a little above average overall, although chilly nights with some fog patches are possible when and where skies are clear and winds are light.”
For now, the takeaway is simple: September’s stormy weather is not going to last forever.
Expect a few more wet and windy days before calmer, sunnier spells return, especially in the Midlands and southern England.
While cooler patches will remain along coastal and northern regions, the overall trend points towards milder, more pleasant days.
So, if you’ve been wondering when that warm glow of summer will make a comeback, mark mid to late September on your calendar. Weather watchers can look forward to a classic Indian summer feel, even as autumn begins to settle in.
