Why is Crans-Montana significant?
Crans-Montana is located in the heart of the Swiss Alps, roughly 25 miles north of the Matterhorn, and is known for its high-end ski slopes, luxury accommodation and vibrant nightlife.
During the festive season, bars and clubs are often packed with tourists celebrating after a day on the slopes.
The resort’s international reputation means visitors from across Europe, including the UK, are likely to have been present at the time of the fire.
What support is in place for those affected?
Swiss authorities have confirmed that a reception centre has been opened to assist those impacted by the incident. A dedicated helpline has also been set up to help families and friends searching for information about loved ones.
Police have scheduled a news conference for 10am local time in Crans-Montana, where further details about casualties and the investigation are expected.
What caused the fire?
At this stage, the cause of the fire remains unknown. Police say it is too early to speculate and that a full investigation is now underway.
Specialist teams are expected to examine the building, fire safety systems and evacuation procedures. Investigators will also look into whether overcrowding or technical faults may have contributed to the spread of the fire.
Why does this matter to UK travellers?
Swiss ski resorts remain a popular winter escape for British holidaymakers, particularly over Christmas and New Year. This incident is likely to raise renewed concerns about safety in busy après-ski venues during peak travel periods.
UK tourists currently in Switzerland are advised to follow guidance from local authorities and check updates from travel operators.
