Princess Anne Marks Birthday Countdown at 75th Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo
Princess Anne has kicked off the final weeks before her milestone 75th birthday in fitting style by stepping into the heart of an event that shares her birth year.
The Princess Royal, a long-time supporter and now patron of the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, joined performers during rehearsals ahead of this summer’s 75th edition.
The spectacular showcase, first staged in 1950, has grown into one of Scotland’s most iconic annual events, drawing crowds from across the globe.
Anne arrived at Redford Cavalry Barracks, Edinburgh, just days before the Tattoo’s grand opening, to offer her encouragement to those perfecting their routines.
“The Princess nearly always attended preparations for the event to add her encouragement to those taking part in what has become a globally famous event.”
She mingled with musicians and dancers, watching intricate displays take shape. This year’s line-up boasts pipers, drummers, and brass bands from across the British Army, including The Scots Guards, The Royal Regiment of Scotland, and The Royal Corps of Signals.
Joining them are The Duchess of Edinburgh’s String Orchestra and The Band of the Prince of Wales, alongside a striking roster of international talent, from Poland’s Border Guard Band to the United States Honour Guard Drill Team, Ukraine Naval Forces Orchestra, and Switzerland’s famed Top Secret Drum Corps.
More than 220,000 visitors are expected to witness the Tattoo live at Edinburgh Castle between 2 and 24 August, with millions more tuning in worldwide via television and streaming.
For the occasion, Princess Anne wore a classic tartan skirt, a soft mint-green jacket, and her trademark aviator sunglasses — a style that has become as recognisable as her work ethic.
With her actual birthday falling on 15 August, the Princess could well return for one of the performances as a personal celebration. While there are no official plans announced for her big day, the Royal Family will be engaged in commemorations marking the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War.
In honour of her 75 years, the Royal Mint has also released a historic first, a commemorative coin bearing her image, cementing her place not just in royal history, but in the nation’s heart.
