Phil Collins Hospitalised Amid Health Speculation – But It’s Not What Fans Think
Legendary British musician Phil Collins has been admitted to hospital, but contrary to swirling social media rumours, he is not receiving end-of-life care.
The 74-year-old, best known as the voice and drummer of Genesis, recently addressed fears about his health, telling fans he has been “very sick” this year. The admission sparked a flurry of concern online, with some even claiming he had been moved to a hospice.
That claim is false.
A spokesperson for the In the Air Tonight star confirmed to TMZ that he is “nowhere near death” and is in the hospital for a knee operation, not palliative care. No further details about the procedure have been shared.
Collins has battled serious health issues for years. A spinal injury in 2007, sustained while touring with Genesis, left him with dislocated vertebrae, nerve damage, and worsening mobility.
Despite undergoing two surgeries in 2009 and 2015, he was left dependent on a cane and eventually had to give up drumming altogether by 2019 due to numbness in his hands.
His struggles have been compounded by diabetes, diagnosed in 2021. Speaking to Mojo magazine earlier this year, he admitted: “I keep thinking I should go downstairs to the studio and see what happens. But I’m not hungry for it anymore. The thing is, I’ve been sick, I mean very sick.”
While largely retired since Genesis’ farewell tour in 2022, Collins briefly returned to the drums with help from his son, Nic, for the documentary Drummer First. In the trailer, he reflected: “It’s still kind of sinking in a bit… I’ve spent all my life playing drums.
To suddenly not be able to do that is a shock. If I can’t do what I did as well as I did it, I’d rather relax and not do anything. If I wake up one day and I can hold a pair of drumsticks, then I will have a crack at it. I just feel like I’ve used up my air miles. It just feels so strange to hold a pair.”
Collins was last spotted publicly in May, cheering on his youngest son, Mathew, at an Austrian football match. The pair posed for a post-game photo, with the caption: “Two big wins today!”, a touching nod to both Mathew’s victory on the pitch and his father’s rare public outing.
For now, fans can breathe a sigh of relief. Phil Collins remains very much with us, recovering in hospital, not in hospice.
